St. Louisan Napheesa Collier scores 38 points in playoff opener

St. Louisan Napheesa Collier opened the WNBA playoffs in grand style on Sunday afternoon.

The former Incarnate Word Academy star scored a career-high 38 points to lead the Minnesota Lynx to a 102-95 victory over the visiting Phoenix Mercury in Game 1 of their first-round best of three series.

The 6’1” Collier was 11 of 19 from the field and three of five from 3-point range. She also made 13 of her 14 attempts from the free throw line. She added six rebounds and four assists in 38 minutes of action.

Collier’s 38 points was just four shy of the WNBA playoff single-game scoring record of 42 points, which was set by Breanna Stewart of the New York Liberty in 2022.

Collier’s performance on Sunday was only part of a big day of accomplishments for the six-year veteran. She was also named to the Associated Press All-WNBA First Team. She was second in the league’s Most Valuable Player voting to A’ja Wilson of Las Vegas Aces.

The Lynx and Mercury will resume their series on Wednesday night with Game 2 in Minnesota.
