Solar company cancels planned facility in Colorado Springs

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A solar manufacturing company that announced plans in 2023 to expand to Colorado Springs has canceled those plans, citing rising infrastructure costs.

Meyer Burger, a Switzerland-based solar company, announced in July of 2023 its plans to open a high-performance solar cell manufacturing facility in Colorado Springs in 2024.

Meyer Burger planned production facility.

The facility was slated to be built off Garden of the Gods Road and was expected to employ more than 350 people.

Now, the company has decided to pull those plans, stating that infrastructure pricing increases were a major factor in the decision.

There was an unexpected negative outcome with the private financing that Meyer Burger anticipated would close in August. A key factor in the decision to decline our financing package included the current increase in US infrastructure costs which would have made the expansion of the rented semiconductor factory in Colorado Springs considerably more expensive. As the hiring process of the production staff had not been started yet, we had to lay off only a very small number of people working on-site in Colorado Springs.
