Patient Hangs Herself At George Mukhari Academic Hospital

Police have launched an investigation following the tragic death of a 36-year-old woman in an apparent suicide at George Mukhari Academic Hospital.

The woman reportedly took her own life using a cellphone charger in the hospital bathroom.

According to the Gauteng Department of Health spokesperson, Khutso Rabothata, the department is deeply saddened by the event.

The woman had been admitted on 21 September 2024 and was being cared for in ward 37. On Monday, 23 September 2024, at around 13:00, a nurse noticed a locked bathroom door.

After several attempts to get a response, the nurse, with help from another, forcefully opened the door, only to discover the patient had hanged herself with a cellphone charger cable.

Despite immediate resuscitation efforts, she was declared dead by a doctor at the scene.

The hospital staff, affected by the traumatic incident, are receiving counselling. The South African Police Service (SAPS) is now investigating the case.

The Gauteng Department of Health expressed condolences to the woman’s family and reiterated its commitment to providing safe and compassionate care.

Earlier this year, George Mukhari Academic Hospital also faced another tragedy when a psychiatric patient died in a fire in the isolation ward. The department continues to work on measures to prevent such incidents.
