Man, 49, dies in horror car crash with lorry as cops release first picture of victim who ‘sadly passed away at scene’

A MAN has died following a road crash in Co Antrim.

Robert Lee, 49, from the Ballymoney area, had been driving a car that was involved in a collision with a lorry on the Frosses Road in Ballymena at around 11.20pm on Thursday night.

Police have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

Roads Inspector Cherith Adair, from the Collision Investigation Unit, said Mr Lee sadly passed away at the scene.

She said: “Officers attended a report of a collision involving a Scania lorry and a silver Honda Civic, together with colleagues from partner emergency services.

“The driver of the car, 49-year-old Robert Lee, who was from the Ballymoney area, sadly passed away at the scene.

“Officers from the Collision Investigation Unit are examining the circumstances of the collision, and would like to hear from witnesses, or anyone who may have captured dashcam or other footage, who may be able to assist with their inquiries.

Mr Lee is the third man to lose his life on the roads in Northern Ireland within the last two days.

Daniel McCallister, from the Tandragee area, sadly passed away on Wednesday afternoon just days after sustaining critical injuries in a two-vehicle collision.

The 18-year-old was involved in a crash between a blue Volkswagen Jetta and a blue Volkswagen Touran.


The vehicles both collided on the Cladymilltown Road in Markethill, Co Armagh on Sunday.

Emergency services and officers from the PSNI rushed to the scene of the collision shortly before 10:45pm and rushed both drivers of the cars to hospital.

The driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash is still in a critical condition and is currently fighting for his life in hospital.

There were no passengers in either of the vehicles involved in the crash.

FATAL HIT-AND-RUN

And yesterday, a man, aged in his 70s, was killed in a fatal hit-and-run.

The pensioner was riding a motorcycle when he was hit by a dark-coloured car that failed to stop and fled the scene of the crash.

Emergency services and members of the Police Service of Northern Ireland rushed to the scene on the Boa Island Road in Belleek, Co Fermanagh shortly before 3pm on Thursday.

The motorcyclist, who has been named as 70-year-old Richard Maze, was provided with first aid by PSNI officers and other emergency services at the scene.

However, he sadly died at the scene from his injuries.

Police arrested a 70-year-old man in connection with the crash last night. He has since been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

He has also been charged with failing to remain where an accident occurred, causing injury, failing to report an accident whereby injury was caused and failing to stop where accident occurred causing injury.

The man is due to appear at Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Monday, October 14.
