Labor Day deals: How to save more

(WSPA) – We could all use a break from high prices and this weekend you’ll see more deals than we’ve seen in a while.

7NEWS found more retailers are reacting to inflation, pulling out all the stops to lure shoppers with extra discounts this Labor Day weekend.

More deals overall

Jonathan Carnes knows his way around a hardware store.

He’s bought tools, grills, you name it, and said he is definitely “fixin'” to shop more this weekend.

“I think the two holidays I look forward to are Memorial Day and Labor Day for those kinds of deals. Obviously, the planting season for Memorial Season and for Labor Day the stuff that’s going out for the fall,” Carnes said.

At Classic Ace Hardware, on Woodruff Road in Greenville, shoppers may be pleasantly surprised with the scope of the discounts.

“So it’s large, it’s a larger ad than I think we’ve seen in a while for any sale, Labor Day or any other time. It’s full of all kinds of stuff, paint, grills, it’s something for everyone in here, yard, lawn equipment, fertilizers, power equipment. It’s pretty endless,” Assistant Manager, Allen Mobley, said.

What to expect, and the unexpected

Now, when it comes to shoes and clothes it’s a great time to stock up on what you might need for next year. At retailers like Dillard’s in Greenville, they take the summer shoes, put them on the racks by size and all of them are 65% off.

You’ll see the same steep discount for swimwear and beach towels, and that’s not all.

“Normally sunglasses do not go on sale, but we have Versace, Dolce and Gabbana, Prada and Tiffany & Co. that are marked anywhere from 30-65% off,” Keisha Cole, the Dillard’s Store Manager in Greenville, said.

She said that’s something you don’t normally see.

Avoid the “retail game”

We do normally see sales on furniture and mattresses over the holiday weekend.

Mike Ells, owner of Carolina Direct on Highway 14 in Greer, is rolling out special liquidation prices on dozens of items.  No matter where you shop, he warns, be sure to compare prices since not every sale is a true discount.

“I call it retail games,” Ells said. “There’s a lot of manufacturers in places that mark things up to mark it down to give you a perceived discount and that’s not always the case so you want to do your research.”

Ells also explained when it comes to top-brand mattresses, the manufacturers set the price so no matter where you shop you won’t see much difference.

He offers other incentives like monthly financing or a price drop if you pay by check or cash.

How to find deeper discounts

To get additional discounts consider downloading your favorite store apps to stay up to speed on the sales. And for notifications on multiple retailer sales try The Krazy Coupon Lady (KCL) app.

Heather Wheeler, co-founder of KCL, said don’t overlook the unexpected deals.

“I think one of the ones that is most surprising is that groceries are actually on really good sale over Labor Day. So we’ll see chips and soda have really good discounts. Even on Amazon, last year we saw Jif peanut butter was 53% off and other grocery items, so that will be at the grocery store but also you can check Amazon as well,” Wheeler said.

No matter what you’re looking for, chances are you’ll find a price that’s worth it as retailers pile on the discounts hoping even weary shoppers open their wallets.

“Especially with inflation being high and good deals are harder to come by,” Carnes said.
