The killer wept in front of the cameras, accusing his mother of ‘saying hurtful things to him’[/caption]

Loretta was found dead at her son’s home in the northern province of Modena, Italy.

A weeping Carbone, who had been living with his mother for the last 15 years, told outlet Pomeriggio Cinque on Monday that he “didn’t know why I did it… I couldn’t manage her.”

“Every now and then she made me angry as she kept repeating herself,” he added.

Italian media reports that Loretta’s body was first found on Sunday in her bed by her daughter.

After his mother was discovered, Carbone was instantly made a suspect in her killing, and drones were dispatched to assist in his search.

He told Pomeriggio 5 that he had run away and was walking the streets of Pavullo, a nearby town, before going back to their shared house in Spezzano di Fiorano.

Carbone insisted he was not hiding and left “to do nothing, to get away”.

The killer son admitted he used shoelaces to strangle his mother after trying to suffocate her with a pillowcase and ribbons.

Before bursting into tears, he said: “My mother would make me a little angry every now and then, but it wasn’t like I went completely crazy.

“She just made me a little angry because she always said the same things…

“I wasn’t getting treatment [for her] anywhere… It just came to me.

“Instinctively I did it.”

Carbone claimed that his mother was “between dementia and Alzheimer’s” and would sometimes say hurtful things to him.

“I couldn’t take it anymore… I couldn’t handle it,” the man said.

Reporter Fabio Giuffrida made the arrest public on Monday afternoon after calling the police during the shocking interview.

According to local media, Carbone was brought to the police station for questioning and, upon being shown the evidence against him, was “unable to speak”.

Late on Sunday, Loretta’s body was taken for an autopsy but no results have been released as of yet.

Neighbours informed the Italian media that Carbone, who lived a reserved life, had been jobless for a while as his mother was ill.

Social services were not looking into Carbone and his family, according to local outlets.

Pomeriggio Cinque faced criticism for its decision to air the interview.

Deputy director of TV channel TG La7, Gaia Tortora, said on X: “This is not our job.

“Tearing up the code of ethics, we are hitting rock bottom.”

But reporter Myrta Merlino said that police had given her permission to run the interview and that Carbone clearly told her: “I’m the one you’re looking for.”
