Darts star, 16, dubbed the ‘next Luke Littler’ as he becomes youngest ever to play in Modus Super Series

RYAN BRANLEY has been dubbed the “next Luke Littler” after making history in the Modus Super Series.

The 16-year-old darts ace became the event’s youngest ever player on Thursday as he made his tournament debut.

He follows in the footsteps of the Nuke, who won two seasons in the Modus Super Series in 2023.

Branley enjoyed a dream debut as he ended his first day top of the table.

It did not take long for the teenager to settler in either as he hit a 114 checkout in just his second leg against Dennis van der Ende.

His 4-1 opening victory over Van der Ende was one of four wins from five matches for Branley.

After losing to Ross Montgomery in his second match, he went on to see off Darren Barton, Dan Nicholls and Jamie Kelling.

The wins included a 104.53 average, three 180s and perfection on the doubles in a 4-1 demolition of Barton.

Branley showed it was far from a fluke as he returned to the oche on Friday.

He won both of his first two matches on the second day against Kelling and Nicholls to maintain his lead in the standings.

However, he brushed off any comparisons to Littler after being asked about the pressures of following in the Nuke’s footsteps.

Branley admitted: “I’ve got no expectations, just do what I can.”

After catching the eye in the Modus Super Series, Littler went on to reach the final of the PDC World Darts Championship.

The 17-year-old has since continued his meteoric rise in his first year as a professional.

Littler has picked up nine event wins on tour in 2024, including both the Premier League and World Series of Darts Finals.

However, he will not add to his tally of EuroTour triumphs this weekend.

Instead he will take a weekend off after withdrawing from the Hungarian Darts Trophy.

Inside Littler's massive rise

LUKE LITTLER has taken the darts world by storm since exploding onto the scene at the PDC World Championship at the beginning of the year.

The Nuke reached the final on his Ally Pally debut at just 16 years of age – smashing records along the way.

He has then gone on to win a host of PDC events and the Premier League title – which he claimed at the O2 Arena by beating world champion Luke Humphries in May.

He also finished his first season in the World Series as the No1 ranked player.

He has joined Jude Bellingham on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe list.

And the teenage titan even had to snub an invite from the WWE.

The Sun exclusively revealed that Littler is plotting to create a fitness empire.

He is also cashing in away from the Oche thanks to an Instagram side hustle.

And he’s even the face of a brand new cereal.

But he is newly single after splitting from girlfriend Eloise Milburn following a 10-month relationship.

Check out all of our latest Luke Littler stories.

Three things Mikel Arteta needs to do to topple Man City and outsmart Guardiola in Premier League Clash of the Titans

FINE margins were all that separated Manchester City and Arsenal in their title race last season.

That was the closest that the North London club have come to winning the league under Mikel Arteta so far, but this weekend sees the two sides meet again in an early but potentially crucial match-up.

Arsenal have been City’s closest challengers in the last two seasons[/caption]

Arsenal actually fared better across their two games against City last season, winning the first meeting 1-0 at the Emirates before securing a 0-0 draw at the Etihad.

Despite finishing in second position at the end of the season, the former Arsenal captain came under criticism from sections of the Gunners fanbase for playing too defensively in some matches.

Now, with Arsenal and Arteta preparing to face off against their biggest challengers, the Spanish coach will be preparing a game plan that he hopes can result in them drawing first blood in the title race.

We have taken an in-depth look at three of the key tactical points that can help Arsenal achieve that goal against Pep Guardiola’s side on Sunday.

Arsenal need to put City under pressure

a diagram of the average team position for arsenal v tottenham

There are really no secrets around the way Man City will approach this game, as it is the same they will approach every game this season.

A 4-3-3 shape will be partnered by them looking to dominate possession of the ball as they play forward through the thirds and dominate the attack in all areas of the pitch.

However, their possession game is not based on passing for the sake of passing.

Instead, they pass with a sense of purpose as they look to move the ball into dangerous areas and create opportunities for talismanic striker Erling Haaland.

In order to combat this approach, Arsenal cannot afford to be passive out of possession.

There can be a temptation for teams, even those at Arsenal’s level, to look to sit back and be strong and compact against the ball when they face City’s metronomical passing.

Here we see Arsenal pressing high against Spurs and disrupting attempts to play out

Despite Arsenal having the players to be successful in this approach, they will be better suited to pressing high and trying to disrupt the City build-up as early as possible.

There is, of course, a risk in choosing to press against City in this manner and if the champions are able to play quickly and break the pressure then they can have space to play into.

They also pose a real risk when playing more direct passes into the body or feet of Haaland on the highest line.

Despite this potential risk, putting pressure on City and being more brave and aggressive against them will pay off for Arsenal.

Here we see another example of the way Arsenal coordinate a structured press

If you put City under pressure high then you can force mistakes in their passing game, which in turn can create chances to turnover opportunities and yielding high-quality chances at goal.

The likes of Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka will be key for Arsenal in terms of leading and coordinating the press.

Arsenal cannot afford to sit back and be passive against the ball this coming weekend.

Play quick combinations in the attack

an arsenal pass map showing the completed passes and incomplete passes a soccer field with the word pass map on it

Under Arteta, Arsenal have developed a reputation for being relatively slow and very structured in how they build the attack.

They have a lot of size in the team with a preference for at least three players on the first line as they build-out, typically with Ben White holding a deeper line at right-back and making a line of three with the two central defenders.

In order for them to be successful against this City side, however, they will need to ensure they play at tempo with quick combinations as they move into the middle and final thirds.

Arsenal will be boosted by the return of Declan Rice, their key player at the base of the midfield, and his presence likely alongside Thomas Partey will allow Arsenal to play with more control in the midfield.

Having Havertz as the central striker also allows Arsenal to overload opposition midfields as the German will drop back into the midfield to join with the build-up phase.

a soccer game is underway and the score is 0-0
When building the attack through the thirds Bukayo Saka often combines with the likes of Kai Havertz

City are very good in possession, but out of possession, they can leave gaps between the lines of their units that can be exploited by good technical teams who move the ball with speed and precision.

It is in these positions Arsenal cannot afford to be passive or slow with the ball.

They need to be able to move the ball quickly and to look for ways to combine and free up attacking players moving into pockets of space.

If Arsenal are able to achieve this as they build and attack in possession then they will force City into a more defensive shape as they look to defend the threat of the transition.

a soccer game is being played on september 21
These patterns of play can be effective for Arsenal, with clever passing and movement able to get players free

Arsenal need to find movement from their advanced central midfielders and from their striker to get into these pockets of space to force City to adopt a more defensive mindset.

To defeat City this weekend Arsenal need to be brave and bold when they are in possession of the ball.

Be aware of the threat in wide areas

a touch map showing the direction of play for savinho v brentford

While the onus for Arsenal is for them to be expressive and brave when they have the ball, there is no doubt they will still need to consider the threat City pose when they are attacking.

Haaland, of course, brings real threat with his performances as the central striker already getting him nine goals in four games.

But so far this season it has been their ability in wide areas causing real threat.

Exciting Brazilian talent Savinho is already playing a key role in this regard following his arrival in the summer.

a soccer game is being played on a field with a betting advertisement in the background
Here, Savinho is isolated against the Brentford fullback and looks to get around the outside before crossing centrally to try to find Erling Haaland

City like to build the attack in a structured manner through the thirds until they reach the final third and release the wide players, such as Savinho, to attack their fullback 1v1.

The key for Arsenal and for Arteta will be to ensure that when City are attacking and are building into the wide areas in this manner they maintain a strong and compact block defensively.

This actually suits Arsenal and part of their success to this point under Arteta has been their dogged ability to defend in a deeper block.

a soccer game is being played in the premier league
City play the pass out into the wide spaces to release the winger in a 1v1

This is part of the reason that their recruitment has tended to centre around taller and more physically dominant players.

There is no doubt Arsenal will have to be strong and secure defensively this weekend to prevent City from being able to easily break them down.

Conclusion

The game this weekend against City represents a difficult balancing act for Arteta, with discipline against the ball set to be key in achieving victory.

However, there is a real sense it is time for Arsenal to be more creative and open from an attacking point of view in order to break City down.

Arsenal ratings vs Atalanta as Raya saves uninspiring Gunners in Italy

ARSENAL had some David Raya heroics to thank for a points in the Champions League opener.

Raya’s stunning double save just after the break spared Thomas Partey’s blushes after the midfielder gave away a penalty.

And that was the closest either side came to a goal in the 0-0 draw.

Here’s how SunSport’s Joshua Jones rated Mikel Arteta’s men…

David Raya – 9

Produced a simply stunning double save to stop Mateo Retegui’s penalty and then flung himself across to push away the follow-up rebound header – even better than his effort to deny Ollie Watkins.

Robbie Savage labelled it the “best save I’ve ever seen” while Gunners fans lauded their Spanish hero, who has conceded just once in five games so far this term.

Ben White – 7

Given the daunting task of trying to keep Ademola Lookman quiet inside a rocking Gewiss Stadium but completed the job with his classic relaxed, languid demeanour.

William Saliba – 8

One of the world’s top centre-backs but did not need to be anywhere near his best – solid enough when called upon, including excellent late sliding tackle in own box.

Retegui showed great movement but Saliba will have far sterner tests this season, none more so than up against Erling Haaland on Sunday.

Gabriel Magalhaes – 7

Like his partner Saliba, Gabriel helped ensure the Arsenal defence came out on top.

Starting to run out of words to say about this pair who just concede so few chances.

Jurrien Timber – 7

Adds an extra dimension to this Arsenal side – showing just how much he was missed when sidelined last season.

Arguably had the easiest evening’s work of the four defenders.

Thomas Partey – 4

Martin Keown described the Gunners’ retraction en masse during the transition as Arteta putting up his own “Thames Barrier”.

But Partey nearly allowed the floodgates to open by giving away the penalty three minutes into the second half – only to be rescued by Raya’s heroics.

Declan Rice – 6

Top awareness to sniff out the Atalanta danger and help control midfield.

But squandered a great chance to drive Arsenal forward when he won the ball on the halfway line and could have launched a potent counter.

Kai Havertz – 6

With Jesus starting up front, Havertz dropped into a deeper role – but he is perfectly comfortable there, too, and can carry the ball forwards.

Little to show for his evening, though, but continued to put a shift in defensively until the final whistle.

Buakyo Saka – 6

Drew the foul from Ederson who collected an early yellow and from the resulting free-kick almost squeezed a low effort into bottom corner but for top save.

Given a breather for final 20 minutes with an eye on Sunday.

Gabriel Jesus – 5

Captain on the night was his typical busy self early on getting himself around but virtually all of his involvement was outside the Atalanta penalty area.

Withdrawn before the hour mark.

Gabriel Martinelli – 4

Struggled to get in the game and then when he did get in, squandered a really good chance when he blazed over.

Definitely not hitting top form so far this season and may well find himself among the subs against Manchester City.

XL Bully ban ‘too extreme’ amid ‘panic and mayhem’ alert as Dail warned THOUSANDS of dogs could be killed

A DUBLIN TD has blasted the XL Bully ban as “too extreme” and warned that “thousands” of dogs could be killed as a result of the crack-down.

Sinn Fein’s Chris Andrews called for a time extension to allow these dogs to “live out their natural lives”, warning that XL Bullies are a type of dog that is a combined variety of breeds.

COLLECT

The Irish Government said the ban is in the interest of public safety following a number of attacks by XL Bullies.

The first phase of the ban begins on October 1, 2024, when it will become illegal to import, breed or re-sell XL Bullies.

From February 1, 2025, owning an XL Bully in Ireland will be illegal.

Mr Andrews warned: “The ban on XL Bully dogs is causing panic and mayhem within dog rescue groups. A ban is too extreme.

“There are much more humane ways to deal with this.”

Mr Andrews said that we “need to see an amnesty” and a time extension so that these dogs can “live out their natural lives”.

He said: “Thousands of restricted dogs could be killed as a result of this ban because XLs are not a breed, they are a type of dog that is a variety of breeds.

“Therefore, deciding on which dog is killed is going to be subjective and arbitrary, and that is simply unacceptable.”

Mr Andrews noted that the mental health of dog rescue organisations is “on the floor”.

He said: “These organisations and those volunteering and working in rescue groups are very committed to dog welfare, and now the Minister wants them to do the very opposite of what is in their nature, namely, to oversee the killing of dogs.

“So many staff are devastated by what is to come. What dog will be next on the ban? 10 years ago, there were calls for other dogs to be banned.”

The Dublin Bay South TD met with the group Working Animal Guardians to discuss the ban.

He highlighted the importance of listening to these type of groups who have a huge amount of experience with dogs and in particular with XL bully dogs.

Mr Andrews continued: “This Government has been in place for five years and there has been no dent in the illegal puppy farms.

“I find it ironic that Ireland will have a wolfhound on its passports, given the State’s track record on animal welfare and this ban of XL bullies. We do not deserve to have a wolfhound on the Irish passport.”

ARE ANY DOG BREEDS BANNED IN IRELAND?

No breed of dog is currently banned in Ireland. But with certain breeds of dog, additional rules must be followed.

This applies to the following types of dog, as well as strains or cross-breeds of these breeds:

  • American pit bull terrier
  • English bull terrier
  • Staffordshire bull terrier
  • Bull mastiff
  • Dobermann pinscher
  • German shepherd (Alsatian)
  • Rhodesian ridgeback
  • Rottweiler
  • Japanese akita
  • Japanese tosa
  • Bandog

In Ireland, restricted dogs or strains and crosses of them must be:

  • Kept on a short strong lead of under two metres
  • With someone over the age of 16, who is able to control them
  • Muzzled when in a public place
  • Wearing a collar with the name and address of their owner, at all times

But Minister Heather Humphreys confirmed more severe rules could be on the cards, saying: “I have asked the Group to examine the restricted breeds list, in line with actions being taken in the UK and Northern Ireland.

“I am committed to working with colleagues across Government in taking whatever action is necessary to strengthen our dog control laws.”

Mr Andrews urged the Minister of State to deal with the owners if there are issues.

He added: “Do not kill the dogs. We have to give an extension to these dogs. Do not introduce this extreme ban.

“Dogs should not pay the price for irresponsible owners. We have seen in other countries that bans do not work.”

A concerned charity, named Dogs Angels Ireland, has set up on GoFundMe to help send XL Bullies abroad to find a home before they are “euthanised”.

HORROR ATTACKS

Last week, an XL bully dog had to be put down after it attacked a man who was walking it for a jailed relative.

The man had been minding the animal as a favour for another man currently in prison when it turned on him in the Kilmore area of north Dublin, on Sunday.

It’s understood the pet may have eaten a plastic bag before biting the walker.

The dog – which weighed 55kgs – bit the walker twice as he struggled to restrain it during the attack on Ballyshannon Road.

The latest incident comes after two English bulldogs were put down after attacking the mother of their owner in Sallynoggin, south Dublin, on September 5.

On that occasion, the dogs were also later put down.

It’s also the latest dog attack after Limerick woman Nicole Morey was killed after two dogs attacked her at her home in Ballyneety.

The young woman had just celebrated her 23rd birthday when she was targeted.

One of the dogs, an XL bully, was shot dead at the scene by gardai.

Chilling moment killer shows off ‘ju-jitsu’ moves before stabbing Ian Wright’s boxing trainer pal to death at nightclub

THIS is the chilling moment a thug showed off his “ju-jitsu” moves before stabbing Ian Wright’s boxing trainer pal to death.

Ross Hamilton, 34, used a shard of broken glass to slash Reece Newcombe in the neck outside Viva nightclub in Richmond, South West London.

Ross Hamilton was seen goading clubbers before the horror

He stabbed Reece, who helped train Wright for a charity boxing match, to death

The thug was captured on film just seconds before the slaughter “spoiling for a fight”.

Hamilton could be seen showing off his so-called ju-jitsu moves as he threatened to “fold” someone.

He then armed himself with the broken bottle and fatally stabbed celeb boxing trainer Reece.

Reece, whose daughter was born just five months before the horror, was seen holding the wound on his neck while crying: “I’m dead – he’s done me.”

Hamilton has now been found guilty of murder following a trial at the Old Bailey.

The killer shouted “how?” as the jury delivered their verdict following 15 hours of deliberation.

The horror unfolded on November 26, 2022, after both men had watched England play USA in the Qatar World Cup.

Hamilton was later seen showing off karate kicks on the dance floor at Viva and shouting he would “ju jitsu the f**k” out of fellow clubgoers.

The prosecutor told the court Hamilton had been “looking for people to fight”.

Reece, who helped train former England star Ian Wright, 59, and other celebrities for a charity boxing match in 2014, meanwhile was enjoying an after-party at the club with pals.

At around 4am, he made the “tragic” decision to “confront” Hamilton after being goaded unaware Hamilton had armed himself with the broken glass.

Reece was rushed to hospital where he had emergency surgery but he was sadly pronounced dead at 10.15am.

Hamilton turned himself into a police station a few days later and claimed self-defence.

He has been remanded into custody ahead of sentencing on Octber 11.

Detective Inspector Kevin Martin, from Specialist Crime South, said: “Today is about Reece and his family. My thoughts remain with them following this truly senseless tragedy, but particularly so in light of this result.

“Nothing will bring Reece back to them, but they have at least seen his killer held to account for his cowardly attack. They have remained resolute despite the nearly two years since Reece was murdered.

“Reece was simply out having a good night with friends. He was a much loved son, brother, partner and friend to many. He had recently become a father and had so much to look forward to.

“Hamilton was a stranger to him, yet his senseless violence took Reece’s life.”

Tragic Reece's family pay tribute

The heartbroken family said: “Nearly two years have passed since we lost our beautiful Reece .

“Reece in life was the shining light at the centre of our loving family. That light was brutally snubbed out by the murderous moronic actions of Ross Hamilton, a callous bully on 26 November 2022.

“Many serious incidents involving Hamilton were recorded on CCTV as he bullied his way throughout the night.

“This resulted in him arming himself with a lethal weapon moments before deliberately striking our beloved Reece in the neck with a broken bottle .

“This culminated in the death of a 31-year-old loving father of two baby girls in the early hours of that fateful dreadful morning.

“Reece was only able to enjoy being a father to his baby daughter for five months. His second daughter whom he would never get to see was born the following summer of 2023 .

“The outpouring of grief after Reece’s passing was unprecedented, this showed the love people held for him. Four thousand people walked behind family members to lay wreaths at the spot where he was brutally murdered a week before.

“There is never a moment that goes by without us thinking of the beautiful soul that was our Reece.

“We, his family, are forced to navigate this cruel existence without him as we walk forward in life completely heartbroken.

“We are eternally grateful to the brave witnesses who came to court, to the police and the family liaison officers, also to the jury who weren’t intimidated or deceived by Hamilton as he lied his way through his testimony.

“As a family, still deeply in mourning, our wish going forward is that he now faces the full weight of the law in its entirety.

“The public, including the women he has previously attacked, will sleep better at night in the knowledge that he will no longer be at liberty to harm, maim or murder anybody else after his day of judgment .

“We will love you for eternity our beloved beautiful Reece.”

Three Champions League giants ‘already tracking Mason Greenwood’ with Man Utd set to cash in again

MASON GREENWOOD is being tracked by three Champions League clubs, transfer reports say.

Greenwood has five goals in just four games since signing for Marseille in France in the summer.

And his form has seen the likes of Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich all register interest, according to talkSPORT.

Scouts from all three are said to have watched Greenwood in action for Marseille.

It comes after the forward scored ten in 36 games on loan for Getafe in Spain last season.

Greenwood was banished from Manchester United from January 2022 after being charged with attempted rape and assault, which he denied.

The criminal charges were dropped 12 months later.

Following an investigation by United, he spent last season away before joining Marseille for £30million in a permanent deal this summer.

Greenwood, 22, also has no way back into the England set up and now looks to switch allegiances to Jamaica.

As revealed by SunSport, the FA have been approached by the Jamaican Football Federation with a formal request to transfer Greenwood’s international registration.

The process is already underway with Greenwood looking to end his near-four year international exile.

Jamaica first tried to get Greenwood to switch his international allegiance after the criminal charges were dropped last February.

But he initially declined as he wanted to revive his career with England – although that was ruled out by interim boss Lee Carsley.

ARSENAL fans’ hearts were in their mouths when Atalanta’s Mateo Retegui appeared odds-on to header a rebound home from his saved penalty.

But, hero of the hour David Raya, 29, pulled off the most epic of double saves to ensure the Gunners ended up unscathed in their Champions League opener in Bergamo.

A horror injury playing for Blackburn left Raya’s career hanging in the balance

Just 10 years ago, the Spain international was turning out for non-league Southport.

However, it was a moment at Blackburn that would define the shotstopper’s incredible courage and bravery.

It was an incident that could have, ultimately, put an end to Raya’s career before he would become No1 at the Emirates.

In a collision with West Brom’s Jay Rodriguez at the Hawthorns, the former Brentford goalie suffered a serious face-altering injury.

Medics rushed to the pitch to give him oxygen, as he lay stricken on a stretcher.

He was immediately hospitalised, where he was treated for his injury.

Former Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray revealed the sickening extent of the blow in his post-match interview.

‘His nose was almost pushed into his skull’

Speaking to BBC Sport, Mowbray revealed: “The players were feeling sick with what they saw.
