Tiny Greek village you won’t have heard of dubbed a coastal gem has £4 sunloungers and amazing seafood

BRIT holidaymakers probably won’t have heard of Sivota, a tiny harbour village in Greece.

Sivota is often overshadowed by its more well-known neighbour Corfu; however, it has all the trappings of a seaside holiday.

Located in Epirus Region in Greece, Sivota sits near other well-established beach towns like Praga.

While the tiny village isn’t on the main tourist trail in Greece, it is a popular stop on sailing holidays in Ionian.

This is largely thanks to its pretty beaches, lush coastline and crystal-clear waters.

Travel blog Travels & Wandering described Sivota as a “hidden gem” in northwestern Greece.

The fishing village is surrounded by several small islets, including Mavro Oros and Agios Nikolaos.

There are plenty of beaches within walking distance of Sivota, including Bella Vraka Beach.

Beach-goers will need to walk through shallow waters to reach the tiny beach, which is actually on the tiny island of Mourtemeno.

Other beaches in the area include Mega Ammos Beach, which is known for its snorkeling, Zavia Beach and Gallikos Molos Beach.

Gallikos Molos Beach is the closest beach to Sivota, it also has the most facilities of any of the neighbouring beaches with a beach bar.

Renting sunloungers and parasols at the beach cost just €5 (£4.20) per person, making it more affordable compared to the likes of Mykonos and Santorini, as reported by the Independent.

Three little-known Greek islands to visit

THERE are plenty of Greek islands to visit, including several little-known spots that are free from the crowds.

  1. Located in the Dodecanese Sea, Symi is a fairytale-like island home to traditional Greek villages and harbour-front bars and cafes. Reaching the tiny island became a lot more accessible after Jet2 announced the launch of a new route from the UK.
  2. Despite being twice the size of Mykonos, Tinos is often overlooked by most holidaymakers. But holiday demand for the island is predicted to grow thanks local food and sandy beaches.
  3. Meanwhile, the island of Paros has a wave of chic new hotels opening. The island has its own airport – making it much easier to visit than some other smaller islands in Greece that can only be accessed by ferry.

Visitors can also book onto boat trips where they’ll be able to explore some of the smaller islands, hidden coves and the Blue Lagoon.

Because of its coastal location, Sivota is known for its amazing seafood, with several restaurants only serving fish.

Spiridoula taverna has been named as Sivota’s number one seafood restaurant on TripAdvisor.

Other top-rated restaurants include 12 gods, which has views overlooking the harbour, and Odyssey Taverna.

There are a number of affordable hotels in Sivota, including LANGO LUXURY LIVING Sivota, which has £60 stays.

Direct flights operate from the UK to Preveza, the closest airport to Sivota.

EasyJet operates direct flights between London Gatwick and Preveza, with one-way fares from £33 in October.

Preveza Airport is a 90-minute drive from Sivota.

Alternatively, holidaymakers can fly from the UK to Corfu International Airport where they’ll be able to board a ferry from Corfu to Sivota.

A short history of Sivota

In ancient times, the area around Sivota was inhabited by the Thesprotians ( a Greek tribe).

The waters near Sivota were the site of the Battle of Sybota in 433 BC – a significant clash between the Corinthians and the Corcyraeans and one of the precursors to the Peloponnesian War.

During the Roman period, the region fell under Roman control and subsequently became part of the Byzantine Empire.

Throughout the Middle Ages, Sivota saw various invasions and occupations, including those by the Normans and the Venetians.

In the 15th century, Sivota, like much of Epirus, came under Ottoman rule, which lasted until the early 20th century.

The village and its surroundings became part of the modern Greek state following the Balkan Wars in the early 1910s.

In recent decades, Sivota has transformed from a quiet fishing village into a popular tourist destination, renowned for its crystal-clear waters, lush greenery, and charming harbour.

If you don’t want to go this far, then a beautiful UK seaside town has been compared to a Greek island.

And another seaside town in the UK is also home to dolphins, whales and puffins, as well as amazing castles.

You’ll take home a Flymo EasiWeeder worth £159.99, a Flymo EasiCut 450 hedge trimmer worth £137.09 and a £149 Flymo EasiClear leaf blower.

Gardening expert Sarah Bentham, from Flymo, told Sun Gardening five top tips for clearing your outside space. Remember you can always use the fallen leaves to create Leaf Mulch.

  1. Safety is key.

Before you get started, remember leaf blowers are designed to blow garden debris at very high speed, therefore, protection is needed for your eyes and ears if you are using a loud, powerful petrol blower. Also, if it’s been raining, avoid walking over the slippery surface of wet fallen leaves.

  1. Consider your space.

Next, it’s important to consider the space you’re working with. Keep in mind that removing leaves from a gravel path poses more challenges compared to a long, grassy lawn. Therefore, make sure you plan your route, ensuring that the leaves are blown in a safe direction as a powerful leaf blower or vacuum could potentially harm the look of your garden or even the equipment itself when used on gravel.

  1. Use varying speeds.

Make sure to set your blowing speed to match the requirements of the task. When dealing with harder surfaces, opt for a slower speed to efficiently manage leaves and grass clipping with control. Some leaf blowers produce high noise levels, so show consideration to your neighbours by choosing a quieter setting that can handle the job without causing disruption.

  1. Blow with the wind.

Instead of working against it, blow in the direction of the wind to harness full power to get rid of the leaves without your work being undone. Begin by focusing on the edges of your garden and blow all debris to the centre, reducing the number of leaf piles which will save you time and effort when it comes to collection.

  1. Divide and Conquer.

As you start to blow, divide your garden into sections to make it more manageable. Swiftly remove your leaves by carefully blowing them into a pile in each section and onto a sheet. That way, transporting the fallen foliage to the garden bin or compost heap is easier.

Pensioners exercise more than Brits who are HALF their age, research shows

OAPs exercise more regularly than those half their age, according to research.

A poll of 2,000 adults revealed those aged 25 to 34 exercise on an average of 13 days of each month.

But those over 75 make an effort to be active on 16 days despite a quarter not finding it enjoyable compared to 64 per cent of their younger counterparts.

While over 65s are most inclined to get up and exercise in the morning, with 65 per cent of Gen-Z preferring to exercise in the afternoon or evening.

Of all adults, Leeds and Liverpool residents keep the least active, while Bristolians are exercising most per month.

The research was commissioned by porridge brand Quaker, which has launched ‘Sunrise Sessions’ – morning dancercise classes in collaboration with Radio 1 DJ Jack Saunders.

A spokesperson said: “The research has shown the varying approaches to exercise across the country – and kudos to the older generations for keeping moving.

“However, there’s clearly a confidence block when it comes to Gen Z and Millennials with things like exercise classes and visits to the gym sometimes feeling a little overwhelming.

“But exercise can form part of a great start to the day alongside a breakfast to help set you up for what’s ahead.”

Home workouts were the most common method of exercise according to all respondents – with swimming, jogging, hiking and swimming also popular.

Having a swim was also seen as the top activity they’d like to try, followed by Pilates and yoga.

However, 34 per cent admitted to having a lack of motivation when it comes to exercise, with the same percentage not finding it enjoyable.

While 18 per cent struggle to find time in their day to do so and 17 per cent consider the gym to be intimidating.

A quarter (24 per cent) feel more motivated during a workout if they’re listening to good music, while 29 per cent like getting out in the fresh air most.

A spokesperson from Quaker, which is hosting the Ibiza-inspired ‘Sunrise Sessions’ in London on the 23rd and 24th September, added: “Some people find the start of the day following a good rest is the best time to get on your feet and exercise.

“For many, it’s hard to give your best after a long, busy day, so we want to help people make the most of their mornings.

“Collaborating with a fantastic DJ like Jack Saunders, we’re sure this can give some much needed motivation and loads of fun to some feel-good music.”
