Three associates of supergang drug cartel boss James ‘The Don’ White jailed over solar panel money laundering scheme

THREE hoods have admitted their part in a drugs importation plot headed up by James ‘The Don’ White – the mob boss who took over the gang run by two missing kingpins brothers.

The trio pleaded guilty just weeks after Jamie ‘Iceman’ Stevenson tried to blame White for orchestrating his cocaine in bananas plot linking Scotland to Ecuador.

John Bonner, Christopher Laycock and David Kelly were working for White and his sidekick Paul ‘The Captain’ Fleming – using a fake solar panel form to hide their shipments.

The High Court in Glasgow heard White had taken over the reins of the notorious mob after James and Barry Gillespie vanished in Brazil in 2019.

Prosecutor John Keenan KC said the gang operated throughout the UK, Europe and other countries including Mexico and the United Arab Emirates.

Laycock, 51, had a direct link to cartel boss White, 47, and played a key role in helping set up a fake solar panel firm as a front for drug trafficking.

Bonner, 37, was a close associate of White’s right-hand man Fleming, 40, and helped organise vast amounts of dirty cash to be ferried to various locations.

Lower-level hoodlum Kelly, 42, would transport the ill-gotten gains in his work’s van.

The trio were swept up as part of Police Scotland’s long-running  Operation Escalade – a crackdown on the country’s most prolific organised crime gang.

The probe has already seen a string of convictions for offences including murder, international drug smuggling and money laundering.

Laycock, Bonner and Kelly were snared as part of an off-shoot drug trafficking sting dubbed Operation Buggy.

This was an investigation into drug trafficking into Scotland from Spain between March 29, 2020, and January 8, 2022.

The gang used premises at Hillington Industrial Estate in Glasgow as a hub to run their racket linking Scotland from Spain between March 29, 2020, and January 8, 2022.

A shell company called Adastra Access Off Grid was also set up as a front for the dealing.

Laycock – who lived between Spain and Manchester – had given valuable “advice” on this in an attempt to make it appear legitimate.

In early January 2022, watching police clocked five pallets containing fake solar panel generators being loaded onto van at the industrial site.

They were then ferried to a business park in Essex which Laycock had links to. It was there detectives swooped.

The generators had engineered “voids” lined with lead and foil designed to conceal and transport huge amounts of narcotics.

Mr Keenan: “They had the capacity of holding up to 400kg of controlled drugs.”

The solar panels had been destined to another fake business this time based in Alicante – just an 18 minute drive from Laycock’s home in the area.

The law authorities hacking the EncroChat phone network favoured by criminals helped catch the gang members.

The court heard Laycock was close to White and regularly communicated on EncroChat with both him and Fleming.

This included discussing anti-surveillance techniques to try and defeat detectives.

Mr Keenan described some of the high level of dirty money and drugs the gang were dealing in.

At one stage, Laycock said he had checked a vehicle cash had been hidden in and it had “more than he thought”.

White told him there was £1.3m in it. The gang boss had also earlier stated he needed £800,000 in Scottish bank notes “moved”.

Laycock further gave White a breakdown of their 100kg cannabis “stock” that they had in May 2020.

Laycock’s home and campervan was searched by police in November 2021.

Officers seized a number of surveillance trackers used by the mob to put on their vehicles to let them know if they had been stopped by the authorities.

The hearing was told Bonner, of Glasgow’s Balornock, was a close associate of Fleming.

Mr Keenan: “He collected money from the group’s drug sales. He passed it on for counting and packaging before Kelly transported it to locations instructed by White and Fleming.”

This included ferrying £850,000 to London.

In April 2020, Bonner checked with an associate about £335,000 being “ready to go”.

Bonner gave advice about when it should be collected, concerned about the then covid travel restrictions.

He also sourced cocaine and heroin from other underworld associates.

Kelly, of city’s Barmulloch, was a friend of Bonner who also communicated with Fleming at times.

Mr Keenan: “He would use his guise of his legitimate work’s van to transport the money for the group throughout the UK.

“There was discussion on EncroChat about collecting controlled drugs from others.”

The court heard of a proposed £240,000 cash pick up in May 2020 and Kelly being asked to check out his window for “any dodgy motors”.

Kelly also asked Fleming at one stage about the setting up of the bogus firm.

Fleming told him it was “defo a goer”.

Kelly’s DNA was found to be on the handles of the fake solar panels after he helped load them onto the van at Hillington.

The court heard the trio had varying levels of involvement at different times in the gang.

White and Fleming had “much more extensive” roles than the three.

White was jailed for nine years and 10 months and Fleming nine years after they each admitted in 2023 to directing others in organised crime.

Laycock, Bonner and Kelly were remanded in custody and sentencing was deferred for reports.

Earlier this month another crimelord Stevenson blamed White and three others for running his £100million cocaine racket before he pleaded guilty.

Stevenson will be sentenced next month.

These two old superstars are absolutely chucked in on their best form – let’s hope for one more round of fireworks

THEY have raced 150 times, won 27 races and are chucked in on their best form.

But some might think it crazy that old boys Rohaan and Summerghand could grab gold and silver in Scotland today… I’m not one of them.

If you are a regular punter there won’t be much you don’t know about ten-year-old SUMMERGHAND (2.25) and seven-year-old ROHAAN (3.35).

What I think we can all say is they are two horses to celebrate.

And on a going day, of which there have clearly been plenty, they both can swoop late and fast with a devastating turn of pace.

Rohaan is expected to face twenty four rivals in the feature Ayr Gold Cup, live on ITV Racing.

Summerghand will be up against at least twenty two foes in the Virgin Bet Ayr Silver Cup.

In racing terms neither is in any way a virgin. They have been here and got the t-shirt.

Rohaan faces a string of hot rivals like Richard Fahey’s Ramazan, the Great St Wilfird runner-up, Portland hero American Affair and Billyjoh, who ran so well at Glorious Goodwood from a horrible draw in the Stewards’ Cup.

Room Service and Lethal Levi are recent winners who will have support, while Jordan Electrics has been sparky all season, and bids for an awesome eighth success of the campaign.

A credit to Jim Goldie who is, of course, Scottish.

Mostabshir can’t be ignored either, and he once ran in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes! Unlike many of those against him, it’s been a while since Rohaan actually landed a prize for Dave Evans, as you have to go back to Ascot just under a year ago for his last victory.

However, that came off a mark of 102, and he was seventh in this race last year off 104.

Today, he can race off a mark of 96 and there was a definite sign of life in the warrior in a small field at Ascot last time.

Remember, this is a horse that in 2022 landed the Wokingham and was third in the Group 1 Haydock Sprint Cup to Minzaal.

If he’s up for it, Rohaan is chucked in. So I have to have a few quid on him each-way.

It’s impossible not to love Summerghand.

He first ran in the Ayr Gold Cup in 2018, finishing eleventh off a mark of 100. In 2019 he was fourth in the six furlong dash off 102, and in 2021 eighth off 112.

Then in 2022 he landed the prize rated 102, only to be last 12 months ago off 107.

Today, he runs off just 89, and he was an eye-catcher in a huge field at the Curragh last weekend.

The in-running comment makes interesting reading for that effort, namely: “Towards rear, headway over 1f out, still plenty to do inside final furlong, ran on well final 100 yards, nearest finish.”

He was beaten just over two lengths.

It’s probably wishful thinking to believe both Rohaan and Summerghand can relive their former glory days this afternoon. But what’s life about if you can’t be a dreamer?

I’ll be at Newbury today for Sky Sports Racing, and to be quite honest it’s a cracking card.

The World Trophy Stakes is a Group 3 over six furlongs and kicks things off.

Annaf is the clear form pick but ran terribly when last seen.

With a bit of juice in the ground the one for me each-way is RELIEF RALLY (1.30) who has good form at this track.

The filly was seen by some as ‘just a juvenile’, but returned this season with a fine fourth in the Fred Darling when not staying and was then second to Elite Status in the Carnarvon. She should be in the frame at the least.

WAXING GIBBOUS (2.05) looks interesting in the Autumn Cup despite being up in the weights for a cracking run at Haydock.

SHADOW OF LIGHT (3.15) might be in the one in the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes for juveniles.

The Godolphin contender was probably on the wrong part of the track and had plenty to do when staying on into second behind Cool Hoof Luke in the Gimcrack with re-opposing Symbol Of Strength just behind and rallying.

I suspect Charlie Appleby’s contender is better than that form suggests and he has every chance here under William Buick.

Horror moment glam fake car buyer RUNS over seller with his own Porsche in sickening driveway theft caught on cam

THIS is the horrifying moment a glam fake car buyer runs over a seller with his own Porsche in a sickening driveway theft – all caught on CCTV.

The suspect arrived at the victim’s home after she saw an advertisement for his luxurious Porsche on AutoTrader.

Doorbell surveillance footage shows the woman, who’s described as being 5ft6 and South Asian, approach the sellers house and ring the doorbell.

She tells the owner: “Hello, I’m here for the Porsche.”

Footage then cuts to the woman sat comfortably in the drivers seat with her hands on the wheel.

But the seller appears to have an inkling as to what’s about to unfold as he attempts to open the drivers door and back door before proceeding to stand at the back of the car.

By the time he reaches the back of the Porsche, with no hesitation the fake buyer appears to put her foot flat on the pedal to reverse – running the car seller over.

The victim is seen tumbling down the drive and appears to narrowly avoid his legs from being crushed by the tyres.

Before the horrific incident, the fake buyer reportedly told the owner that she was waiting for her father.

Cops say they’re looking into another vehicle that was sat outside the victim’s home as a potential accomplice.

The woman fled the scene in the stolen Porsche and is being sought by cops along with a Bentley Bentayga that’s seen in the back of the surveillance footage.

The suspect was originally in a blue SUV car that was captured on CCTV too.

The unnamed victim told CTV News Toronto that he sustained injuries to his elbows, hands and legs and required medical attention after the shocking incident.

The woman in the surveillance is wanted by cops for the vehicle theft and dangerous operation causing bodily harm.

It comes after a Lamborghini driver rammed into a thief who allegedly stole his Rolex at a gunpoint.

The 64-year-old motorist broke into a high-speed car chase to recover the designer watch from the crook on a motorbike.

The Lambo owner had stopped at a traffic light in Sao Paulo, Brazil, when the suspect reportedly stole the lavish timepiece.

The footage shows the alleged thief demand the watch from the supercar driver at a gunpoint before fleeing the scene.

As the traffic started moving, the bright green car could be seen speeding up to catch up with the escaping biker.

As the suspect attempts to make an illegal left-hand turn, the furious Lambo owner steps on the gas pedal and ploughs into his motorbike.

The supercar then smashes into a pole, sending the traffic lights to topple to the ground.

The suspect is seen quickly getting back to his feet and dashing away from the crash scene, abandoning his wrecked motorcycle.

The Lambo driver gets out of his smashed up vehicle as several other motorists stop to offer their help.
