‘I miss it sometimes,’ says Sir Alex Ferguson as former Man Utd manager opens up in rare interview

LEGENDARY Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has opened up about “missing” life in the Old Trafford dugout.

The 82-year-old retired from management in 2013 following a 27-year spell with United.

He is still widely considered one of the greatest managers of all-time, having won 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups and two Champions League titles.

Although he stepped away from the job over 11 years ago, Ferguson admits it has taken time to adjust to life outside of football.

In a rare interview with BBC Breakfast, the Scottish icon said: “Good yeah, I have been retired 11 years now so you find a way of adjusting.”

Asked if he misses life in management, he continued: “Yeah, I miss it sometimes.

“I think the first year after retirement, I went to the European final and I said to Cathy ‘this is what I miss’ – big games, the European games.

“So then I went to most of the European finals because I find something I can relate to, something I would liked to have done every day.

“Because these are the big events that United should always be involved in.”

Ferguson’s wife, Cathy, passed away last October at the age of 84.

The couple had been married for 57 years having tied the knot in 1966.

Cathy supported Fergie in his recovery after he suffered a brain haemorrhage six years ago.

The legendary boss made a full recovery after being given a 20 per cent chance of survival.

Ferguson spoke to BBC Breakfast as part of National Playlist Day, which is a UK-wide celebration of the power of meaningful music for people living with dementia.

He said: “Fortunately my memory is quite good, pray the lord and touch wood it will stay that way.

“I read a lot, I do quizzes, and I think that helps, there is the YouTube quizzes with 100 questions and if I don’t get 70 per cent I’m struggling.”

Nine managers Man Utd considered before keeping Erik ten Hag

ERIK TEN HAG appears to be safe as Man Utd manager, but the Dutchman edged dangerously close to the sack.

Here are nine managers Red Devils chiefs are reported to have considered for the job and what allegedly happened with each.

Gareth Southgate

Enjoys plenty of support among Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos chiefs but made clear he wouldn’t talk to any clubs until after Euro 2024. There is yet to be any suggestion that contact was made with the England boss.

Kieran McKenna

Talks were opened with McKenna’s representatives before the FA Cup final, but the former Man Utd coach opted to sign a new deal with Ipswich after Ten Hag’s Wembley win.

Roberto De Zerbi

Allegedly sounded out before the FA Cup final with salary expectations discussed. But Ineos chiefs concluded ex-Brighton boss was not the right fit for the project.

Thomas Frank

Brentford boss met Man Utd representatives the day before the FA Cup final. The Dane also dined with Ratcliffe, Roy Hodgson and Frank Lampard at the launch of a new Ineos car in February.

Marco Silva

Fulham boss reportedly met Man Utd representatives face-to-face two days before the FA Cup final, around the same time as Ten Hag was conducting his press conference.

Mauricio Pochettino

Fell out of Man Utd’s thinking in the first week of June, despite being a favourite of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Thomas Tuchel

Made a very strong impression and came across well during a Monaco meeting. Personal terms were discussed before the ex-Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss decided to step back from the process.

Ruben Amorim

Sporting boss was discussed by the Man Utd hierarchy but did not make the final reckoning.

Roberto Martinez

Portugal manager was considered in the early stages.

Plans for £338m ‘world’s tallest hotel’ with 82 floors & over 1,000 rooms…plus 360-degree glass views of man-made island

THE PLANS for a £338 million “world’s tallest hotel” with 82 floors and over 1,000 rooms – plus panoramic views of the iconic city – have been revealed.

Ciel Tower in Dubai Marina will stand tall at 365m and has already received various awards for its groundbreaking design.

The new hotel, which is set to become the world’s tallest, will span a whopping 104 storeys and cost an eye-watering £338 million to complete.

The structure that’s being built by Immo Prestige Limited and NORR, will offer 360-degree views over the stunning Dubai Marina, the Palm Jumeirah and even the Arabian Gulf.

It is set to have 1,042 rooms, including 150 suites, which will spread across the tower‘s 82 floors.

As well as the deluxe guest rooms and suites the impressive building will also provide premium features for the super rich.

These include the Ciel Observatory and Lounge on the 81st floor and a signature Sky Terrace with an infinity pool and Horizon Bar.

While the mega-structure hasn’t even been built yet, it’s already won various prestigious awards including the Best International Hotel Architecture and Best Hotel Architecture Arabia.

For the Ciel’s foundations, about 12,000 cubic metres of concrete and 2,700 tonnes of steel were used.

The leading architect for the super-structure Yahya Jan told CNN: “This project is not just about architecture. It’s about architecture and engineering coming together.

“That’s why I love the project so much. It is my passion, the convergence of science and art.

“When you design a project as complex as the Ciel, you can never let your guard down, you can never say it’s over. It’s a continuous process.”

It comes after incredible plans for the world’s second tallest skyscraper were revealed, which will include the highest nightclub and observation deck on the planet.

The Burj Azizi in Dubai is set to be an staggering 725 metres (2,379ft) high, coming just behind its neighbour and record holder the Burj Khalifa at 830 metres (2,723ft).

Azizi Developments say construction of the £1.15 billion tower – twice as big as The Shard – has already begun, and is expected to be completed in 2028.

Sales for the lavish skyscraper, planned to be over the 131 storeys, will launch next February, but the probably eye-watering prices have yet to be announced.

The Burj Azizi will feature a unique all-suite seven-star hotel inspired by seven cultural themes.

It will also see luxury residences ranging from penthouses to apartments and holiday homes.

The giant building will have a “one-of-a-kind” adrenaline zone and observation deck, where guests can soak up the desert views of Dubai.

Similarly, plans for a £1 billion skyscraper which include the world’s highest infinity pool, a royal penthouse and rainforest were revealed.

Buyers cans snap up an ultra-luxurious penthouse in Dubai that’s situated way up in the clouds – and you wouldn’t ever have to leave.

The £1bn Tiger Sky Tower claims it will break at least five world records when it’s completed – including the highest restaurant and infinity pool.

The Tiger Properties project is home to 18 luxurious penthouses at a whopping 1,398ft and a majestic royal penthouse at 1,400ft – the highest in the world.

Callum Walsh ‘is a Netflix series waiting to happen’ predicts Thomas Carty ahead of 3Arena dust-up

CALLUM WALSH deserves the Hollywood treatment as he returns home for his Dublin debut.

That is the verdict of heavyweight pal Thomas Carty, who will box on his undercard at the 3Arena.

Carty is aiming to put on a show in his own bout too

Cork fighter Walsh upped sticks during the pandemic to move to Tinseltown and turn pro.

He rocked up in the famed Wild Card Gym and was thrown straight into tough sparring bouts by trainer Freddie Roach.

‘King Callum’ did enough to earn the legendary coach’s respect, who quickly agreed to work his corner from then on.

And Walsh has shown his worth with 11 straight wins, attracting a heavy-hitting team to come on board along with Roach.

Fight boss Tom Loeffler, who worked with the Klitschko brothers and middleweight great Gennady Golovkin, is his promoter.

And UFC chief Dana White is also heavily involved, having been impressed by the 23-year-old’s style and personality.

Now they descend on the Docklands tonight, with Walsh thrown in against Poland’s Przemyslaw Runowski for his homecoming bout.

Carty, who will face Argentina’s Jonathan Exequiel Vergara (6-1) on the bill, said: “Unbelievable, I can do nothing but applaud the bloke.

“I remember when he was moving, watching it day by day.

“I’d be friendly enough with Callum and remember saying, ‘He’s mad, all the way to the States for training’ and look at him now – that’s a Netflix series waiting to happen, 100 per cent.

“That’s really, really impressive what he’s done. He’s broken the mould, broken away and is not following anybody’s blueprint. He’s following his own, isn’t he?

“Nothing gifted, he grafted for it all. And there are no bums on his record.”

Roach has previously worked with Irish fighters such as Wayne McCullough, Steve Collins and Bernard Dunne and he believes Walsh is Ireland’s next world champion.

Carty agrees that he carries the X-factor in both fists, saying: “It’s hard to quantify what ‘it’ is but he seems to have it all right.

“He’s the full package. Regardless of me being a boxer, I might be biased, but I’ll be supporting him all the way. I really, genuinely respect what he’s done.”

The headliner is one of several top Irish prospects in the 147 to 154lb range.

Paddy Donovan, Lewis Crocker, Kieran Molloy, Caoimhin Agyarko and Stevie McKenna are all in that mix and making moves towards title shots.

Carty said: “It’s fantastic. We’re in a great age for boxing at the moment. It’s to be enjoyed and we really should be.

“The signs of what’s coming are really, really positive.

“We’re in a great stage where there’s always young talent coming through and plenty for people to be getting excited about and getting to these cards to support.”

DERBY DELIGHTS

While he will be backstage preparing for his own fight, he is excited about two derby battles that also fill out the card.

Celtic Warriors Gum mate Craig O’Brien, 34, has ten years on Paddy’s brother Edward Donovan and will look to use all his experience to win the Dublin v Limerick battle.

Another capital boxer, Emmet Brennan, will likewise hope his years with the high performance unit, culminating in an appearance at Tokyo 2020, will be too much for Kerry’s Kevin Cronin.

Carty added: “The first one came out of left field. Great fight. Two great lads.

“Obviously Edward comes from a great boxing family while Craig O’Brien has an amazing story, amazing bloke and it’ll be a fantastic fight, I’m looking forward to that one myself.

“I won’t be able to watch much because I’ll have my own fight to worry about.

“I won’t be sharing a dressing room with him either! No – I said already I want all separate.

“There’ll be bottles of water going missing with them townies, no chance. I don’t want to be guilty by association, let them do their own thing!

“It’s a difficult one to call. One coming up and one close to the end.

“The other one is another great fight. I’ll be backing Emmet in that one, experience-wise I just think he’ll have too much, but fair play to Kevin for taking the fight.

“The gap in experience is massive there but this is pro boxing, everybody thinks they can make up the gaps in another department so fair play to the lads.

“It’s a great fight to have on the card – especially for the Irish public that know.”

I ended my engagement within 24 hours over a DM from a stranger – the discovery was unforgivable

WHEN Michelle Elman announced her engagement to her 270,000 Instagram followers, she was on cloud nine.

But her fairytale romance came crashing down in just half an hour, as the announcement sparked a gut-wrenching confession in the 31-year-old’s DMs.

She received a gut-wrenching message after announcing the happy news on Instagram[/caption]

Michelle’s ex-fiance had cheated on her with one of her followers.

And not only that, the other woman was a fan of the author who had read her four books and even spoken to her a few years prior.

“My world came crashing down in less than 24 hours,” Michelle says.

“I’ve never been able to tell the proposal story because it was one of the best days and it’s sad to not be able to look back on it and have that happiness now.

“It is so tinged with sadness.”

Michelle bravely told the story of her engagement – which happened on a Saturday in April in the countryside – on her podcast, In All Honesty.

She had temporarily left her home in London for quieter surroundings while writing a new book.

On the weekend of the proposal, she had friends visiting her in the countryside house she was staying in.

Michelle recalls having a feeling that something was off during the day of her proposal.

She’d had a breakout on her skin and was feeling “scared” while paddle boarding – a hobby she typically loves to do.

But when she saw her ex-beau on his knee, she said “it was like time slowed down”.

He told Michelle that she was the “centre of his universe” and that every day with her “was his favourite day” – all while knowing he had committed the ultimate betrayal behind her back.

The pair, who had also been trying for a baby, inititally agreed not to tell anyone their exciting news.

However, Michelle could barely contain her excitement and found herself spilling the detail to her friends as soon as she returned to the house.

Four red flags your partner is cheating

Private Investigator Aaron Bond from BondRees revealed four warning signs your partner might be cheating.

They start to take their phone everywhere with them

In close relationships, it’s normal to know each other’s passwords and use each other’s phones, if their phone habits change then they may be hiding something.

Aaron says: “If your partner starts changing their passwords, starts taking their phone everywhere with them, even around the house or they become defensive when you ask to use their phone it could be a sign of them not being faithful.”

“You should also look at how they place their phone down when not in use. If they face the phone with the screen facing down, then they could be hiding something.”

They start telling you less about their day

When partners cheat they can start to avoid you, this could be down to them feeling guilty or because it makes it easier for them to lie to you.

“If you feel like your partner has suddenly begun to avoid you and they don’t want to do things with you any more or they stop telling you about their day then this is another red flag.”

“Partners often avoid their spouses or tell them less about their day because cheating can be tough, remembering all of your lies is impossible and it’s an easy way to get caught out,” says Aaron.

Their libido changes

Your partner’s libido can change for a range of reasons so it may not be a sure sign of cheating but it can be a red flag according to Aaron.

Aaron says: “Cheaters often have less sex at home because they are cheating, but on occasions, they may also have more sex at home, this is because they feel guilty and use this increase in sex to hide their cheating.  You may also find that your partner will start to introduce new things into your sex life that weren’t there before.”

They become negative towards you

Cheaters know that cheating is wrong and to them, it will feel good, this can cause tension and anxiety within themselves which they will need to justify.

“To get rid of the tension they feel inside they will try to convince themselves that you are the problem and they will become critical of you out of nowhere.  Maybe you haven’t walked the dog that day, put the dishes away or read a book to your children before bedtime.  A small problem like this can now feel like a big deal and if you experience this your partner could be cheating,” warns Aaron.

The author-turned-influencer shared the news with her 270,000 Instagram followers the following morning.

Within half an hour of clicking ‘post’, her life flipped upside down.

Sat in front of the TV on what was a normal Sunday to everyone else, Michelle received a heartbreaking message.

One of her fans had identified her husband by his full name and sent screenshots of his profile on a popular dating app.

When Michelle confronted her new-fiance, he began to gaslight her by asking: “Why would you say yes to me if you would believe a stranger on the internet over me?”

He also told Michelle that she was “ruining their engagement weekend” as she begged him for an explanation about the damning messages.

I just remember breaking down. It sounded like an animal wailing through the house

Michelle Elman

Then, Michelle received another message from the other woman saying she’d slept with her fiance in November and had proof that he claimed to be single at the time.

He had booked a hotel to cheat on the day he arrived back in England from a holiday in Milan.

The booking confirmation of the hotel in his email was all the proof that Michelle needed to know it was true.

When he had nowhere to run, the cheat eventually admitted to being unfaithful.

It wasn’t just the one time, though.

He had also slept with another woman in Paris the month before their engagement.

And he was even messaging that second woman on the same day he took Michelle shopping for her engagement ring.

My world came crashing down in less than 24 hours. I’ve never been able to tell the proposal story because it was one of the best days and it’s sad to not be able to look back on it and have that happiness now

Michelle Elman

“In total, he’d cheated on me with three women,” Michelle says.

“Many more if you count all of the messages on dating apps, but he’d gone on dates and slept with three.

“He admitted to the third one by the end of the day.

“I just remember breaking down.

“One of my friends who was in the house at the time said there was this animalistic cry throughout the house and she was so scared by it that she didn’t come up to check what was happening.

“It sounded like an animal wailing through the house.”

I know that I am strong but I have never seen the strength in me that I have had for the last few months

Michelle Elman

The experience left Michelle sobbing and “feeling nauseous”, particularly after her ex-fiance left the countryside for a business trip shortly after his cruel confessions.

When she realised that her relationship was officially over, Michelle had no choice but to return to their home in London and soldier on.

She even went on a solo trip to cry out the heartbreak, which was originally booked as a trip she hoped to take while pregnant with her ex’s child.

“I have shocked myself,” Michelle adds.

“I know that I am strong but I have never seen the strength in me that I have had for the last few months.

“There’s something quite amazing about waking up each morning and being proud of yourself, and impressing yourself each day.”

The 18-year-old was involved in a crash between a blue Volkswagen Jetta and a blue Volkswagen Touran.

The vehicles both collided on the Cladymilltown Road in Markethill, Co Armagh on Sunday.

Emergency services and officers from the PSNI rushed to the scene of the collision shortly before 10:45pm and rushed both drivers of the cars to hospital.

The driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash is still in a critical condition and is currently fighting for his life in hospital.

There were no passengers in either of the vehicles involved in the crash.

Tragic Daniel Joseph McCallister has been remembered as the “dearly loved” son of William and Barbara, the “much-loved brother” of Sarah, Jack, Kathryn and Samuel, the dear brother-in-law of Adam, a “cherished grandson” of Jackie and Eileen and a “dear” uncle and nephew.

A notice online reads: “Lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his father, mother and his loving family.”

Markethill High School, which Daniel had attended before leaving in 2022, told how the crash has left the entire community in mourning.

Principal Colin Berry and vice principal Sarah Hargan said: “On behalf of the entire Markethill High School family, we wish to extend our deepest sympathies to the McCallister family following the loss of their dear son and brother, Daniel, who left us in 2022.

“The McCallister Family are extremely well known in this area and there is much sadness and shock within the local community.

“We will continue to keep Mr and Mrs McCallister, Sarah, Jack, Kathryn and Samuel (all past pupils of MHS) in our thoughts and prayers at this very difficult time.”

Family and friends have been told that they are “welcome to call” at Daniel’s home on Friday and Saturday from 2pm to 9pm.

PROBE LAUNCHED

The teenager will be laid to rest on Sunday following a funeral service in St. John’s Parish Church, Mullabrack at 2.30pm.

This will be followed by a private committal in the adjoining churchyard.

Family flowers only have been requestion with donations, if desired to St. John’s Parish Church, Mullabrack, c/o Jackson Stoops & Sons, Funeral Directors, TDI House, 92 Market Street, Tandragee, BT62 2BP or online at jstoops.co.uk.

The Cladymilltown road was closed overnight as a scene was established and officers launched an investigation into the crash. It has since reopened.

Roads Inspector Cherith Adair from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Collision Investigation Unit said: “My detectives are investigating the circumstances of the collision and would like to hear from witnesses or anyone who may have captured dash-cam or other footage which could assist with our enquiries.”

FATAL HIT-AND-RUN

Separately, a man, aged in his 70s, has been killed in a fatal hit-and-run and a second man has been arrested in connection with the fatality.

The pensioner was riding a motorcycle when he was hit by a dark-coloured car that failed to stop and fled the scene of the crash.

Emergency services and members of the Police Service of Northern Ireland rushed to the scene on the Boa Island Road in Belleek, Co Fermanagh shortly before 3pm on Thursday.

The motorcyclist, who has been named as 70-year-old Richard Maze, was provided with first aid by PSNI officers and other emergency services at the scene.

However, he sadly died at the scene from his injuries.

Police arrested a 70-year-old man last night. He has since been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

He has also been charged with failing to remain where an accident occurred, causing injury, failing to report an accident whereby injury was caused and failing to stop where accident occurred causing injury.

The man is due to appear at Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Monday, October 14.

Anthony Joshua made a mistake for Oleksandr Usyk fight… because he didn’t ask me to spar in camp and I was shocked

ANTHONY JOSHUA remains the king of British boxing by mentoring young princes like Moses Itauma who want to take his crown.

Three years ago – when 34-year-old AJ was preparing for his rematch with Oleksandr Usyk – the 6ft 3in freakishly-talented southpaw was desperate for sparring rounds and looked like a tailor-made suitor.

Itauma is part of the same Ben Davison gym as London 2012 hero AJ[/caption]

Team AJ bizarrely overlooked the Chatham wonderkid, despite his identical frame and similar style to the Ukrainian genius.

The snub left the Kent teenager Itauma feeling shocked and confused.

But now the 19-year-old prodigy is part of the same Ben Davison gym as the London 2012 legend.

And they have been bumping biceps and brains in the compact Harlow sweatbox.

Instead of overlooking or undermining the latest generation of British giants looking to knock him off the throne, Joshua is doing everything he can to raise Itauma up to his level.

The 10-0 prospect told SunSport: “I was shocked when they never asked me back for the second Usyk camp because I would have loved to have been part of that.

“I was confused by it but it’s not a question you want to ask a team-mate now – ‘Excuse me mate, why didn’t you invite me for the Usyk camp?’

“I have the privilege to train in the same gym as him now and I was on a walk the other day and I was thinking what I would call him now?

CASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO WELCOME OFFERS

“And it’s a mentor. Because I go to him with a lot of questions about boxing, in the ring and things out of it, I ask him a lot and he always helps me.

“I am just happy to be in this position.”

Eight years ago, when AJ’s Saturday night opponent Daniel Dubois burst onto the pro scene without much of a senior amateur record, he allegedly grabbed the attention of hall-of-fame promoter Frank Warren by flooring Joshua in Team GB sparring.

And four years ago, when schoolboy Itauma was popping up in gyms all over the country – STILL IN HIS UNIFORM – he was earning a fearsome reputation as a babyface killer even the biggest and best didn’t want to work with.

The comparison between Dynamite Dan and ice-cool Itauma seems clear, but he bats it off like a rival’s jab.

He explained: “When everyone first turns professional, we all need a story to sell and that’s what they sold with Dubois, dropping AJ, or whatever happened,

“My story is different. I have a big amateur pedigree and my sparring story is that from a young age I was sparring everyone.

“But I have never come out and said I have knocked out anyone, because sparring stories are just sparring stories, everyone has one.

ANTHONY JOSHUA VS DANIEL DUBOIS: All the information you need ahead of huge world title fight at Wembley

“I believe Frank Warren has said he signed me based off of footage he saw of a sparring session – but I don’t know who I was sparring with.

“I never found out who it was but I could understand the story because I do well in those spars and that’s where I get my confidence from.

“If I was holding my own against guys with world titles and world title shots, at 15, now I am 19 and I can wonder what I might be like in another four year’s time.”
