I’m a budgeting pro – here’s how you can avoid Christmas money hangover and save thousands for jolly season
THE shelves are already stocked with Christmas sweets, decorations and presents – but how do we avoid waking up to a financial hangover this January?
Caz Mooney, author of Caz Mooney’s Budgeting Planner, has revealed some saving tips that you can follow now before the silly season begins.
CREATE AN X-MAS BUDGET
Caz said: “We have a bit of time now to think about how much you’re hoping to have saved.
“I think it’s really important to be realistic.
“So looking at what your income is now and how much you could realistically put aside for Christmas.
SINKING FUNDS
The money pro recommends people to set aside money and start up a sinking fund now.
She explained: “When I’m saving for Christmas, I physically move that money out of my account.
“I find that’s one of the biggest, most helpful tips, if you’re trying to save, is to create a savings jar online.
“Lots of the bank accounts now have them.”
Caz recommended labelling the online jar “Christmas” so you won’t start spending.
She continued: “A lot of the time you can also contribute together. So if you have a partner, or even between siblings.
“It means, then you can all save together.
“You can see the money, and it’s not as easy to take from.”
SUPERMARKET SAVINGS
Caz discussed how supermarket savings cards allow shoppers to continuously add money on and top them up when needed.
She said: “You can start putting aside some money for maybe the food shops.
“If you’re hosting Christmas, you can put that onto a savings card.
“If you say we’re expecting to spend €100 on your food shop, and it was only €90, then you could put that extra tenner on the card.”
PLAN PRESENTS NOW
Start thinking about different options for presents this Christmas such as Secret Santa, personal hampers, experiences, ‘Thrifted & Gifted’ or the “Gift of Memories”.
Caz said: “The gift of memories is always a good gift.
“So you could do something like an itinerary for a whole trip.
“Include everything you’re going to be doing, and it means that you have a bit more time to save up for it as well.”
She added: “It means that you’re giving them the gift of presence rather than present.”
AVOID BUY NOW, PAY LATER
The money pro warned pay later offers could be “kicking the can down the road”.
She said: “It means that you’re often stuck in this loop where you’re basically paying off last Christmas.
“And then you have to go get it all out again for next Christmas, you can get stuck in that cycle.”
PLAN DECORATIONS NOW
Caz said: “At this point of year, in charity shops and on reselling sites like Facebook marketplace and DoneDeal, you will find people’s decorations.
“Because, believe it or not, there are people who will buy a whole load of new decorations each year.”
She added: “Something I’ve done every year, and I still have the last few years, is dehydrating slices of orange.
“They look lovely on the tree, and they look and smell so nice.”
CHRISTMAS MEMORIES
The bestselling author urged parents to start thinking of small budget experiences to make everlasting memories.
A movie marathon, a festive Karaoke, or a Toy Show viewing night can make a child’s Christmas.
The Offaly woman added: “I think the best part of Christmas is popping down to the local Christmas tree lighting.
“We go to a few of them actually. We go to a few villages every year. Some towns have Santa come to turn on the lights.
“He might come in a fire truck or in a horse and carriage.
“We love to see it.”
