BMW PGA Championship leader in frame for £1.15million pay day is a former Amazon driver on £15-per-hour
MATTHEW BALDWIN used to deliver parcels in an Amazon truck but now leads at the BMW PGA Championship in what proves to be an extraordinary comeback story.
Baldwin, 38, has come a long way from his days as a package delivery driver in Warrington that saw him earn £15 per hour as he now eyes a whopping £1.15million pay day.
Almost three years ago, the golfer used to spend the winter months working for Amazon in the North East after another hapless Challenge Tour season left him struggling to pay his mortgage.
The Southport star considered retirement on numerous occasions since losing his DP World Tour card in 2016.
However, his unexpected stint driving a van taught him that the fire still burns.
Baldwin told The Times: “I had three or four months working at Amazon driving a van before the Challenge Tour season started in 2022.
“I did it four or five days a week, practised a little bit while I could, but mainly I was driving the van and delivering parcels.
“I learned a lot from that. I learned that there are other things that I could do in life but I also learned that I really wanted to play golf.”
Baldwin doesn’t look back at his brief spell at Amazon as a difficult time.
But instead remembers those days with a smile on his face, especially the funny ones.
Baldwin added: “I remember pulling up to a block of flats, I jumped out the van, got in the back and all of a sudden I felt like I was moving and I’m like, ‘Oh no, I forgot to put the handbrake on’.
“I ran out the back, ran around the side, yanked the handbrake up, but it still wouldn’t stop. I yanked it more, it eventually stopped a few inches short of a blue Fiesta.
“There was a woman I was delivering a parcel to who watched the whole thing and she said, ‘I couldn’t get my phone out quick enough to film it’.”
But all that is now in the past as Baldwin takes a two-shot lead into the third round at the BMW PGA Championship, with Rory McIlroy four shots off the pace.
And the Brit is enjoying every minute of his game that he knew he still had in him when he was driving the Amazon van.
Baldwin said: “I’m incredibly proud of how I’ve played so far. My golf’s been strong for a while.
“I have not always shown it with the results. I am not going to turn around and say it is not unexpected, but I know it has been in me and it has come out so far this week.”
British Airways AXES flights from UK airport in shock move as hundreds of trips are cancelled
BRITISH Airways has cancelled all its flights from a major city airport in a shock move.
The airline reportedly contacted passengers last night to tell them their flights from Southampton Airport would no longer be going ahead next summer.
British Airways has confirmed it has suspended all flights from a city airport[/caption] Flights from Southampton Airport will no longer be running in the summer of 2025[/caption]A BA spokesperson confirmed: “We are suspending our summer 2025 operations from Southampton Airport and contacting any affected customers with options including rebooking on an alternative flight with us or another airline or a full refund.”
The reason behind the decision is not yet known.
The airline previously ran flights from the city airport to Bergerac, Faro, Malaga, Majorca and Chambery.
These were operated at weekends through BA CityFlyer – a subsidiary running domestic and European flights from Southampton as well as London City.
The Southampton flights were launched on 29 May, 2021 to 11 destinations in the UK, Spain, Portugal, Greece, France and Germany.
The news comes just four months after BA launched its two latest routes from the airport – Bergerac and Majorca.
And it comes just a year after Southampton Airport’s 164m extension to its existing runway.
It was thought that this extension would allow larger aircrafts – and therefore more flights – to take off from the airport, with local MP Paul Holmes saying it would “unlock potential”.
Southampton is not the only airport affected by BA suspensions recently.
Last month, the airline shockingly announced it would be suspending flights between London Heathrow and Beijing from October – one of its “most important routes”.
This followed a three-year pause in London-to-Beijing operations due to Covid.
The Sun has approached Southampton Airport for comment.

Mystery deepens over woman found dead in river wearing Primark crop top & New Look jeans over six months ago
MYSTERY still surrounds a woman found dead in a river wearing a Primark crop top and New Look jeans more than six months ago.
Cops appear to be no closer to identifying the slightly built woman, who was found in the River Mersey.
An image of the green crop top believed to be the same one worn by the woman[/caption] A woman’s dead body was found in the River Mersey in south Manchester on March 21[/caption] Despite an extensive investigation police haven’t been able to identify her[/caption] The woman was also wearing New Look JENNA size 8 jeans and non-slip style socks[/caption]A member of the public first alerted emergency services to the discovery at around 11.10am on Thursday, March 21.
The body had been spotted in a stretch of the River Mersey close to Chorlton Water Park in south Manchester.
The woman, 1.56m in height, with a slim build and medium length dark brown hair, was recovered from the water.
But six months from the grim discovery, few details about her are known despite police appeals.
No-one has come forward to identify her or match a missing person inquiry – suggesting she may have been a foreign national.
Cops have launched specialist examinations, DNA testing, and reviews of missing persons records.
The woman was wearing a green Primark crop top, size 8 New Look branded Jenna jeans and green non-slip socks.
She also did not have any identifiable items in her pockets, or visible jewellery.
The woman had been in the water so long her approximate age, ethnicity, and cause of death have not yet been established.
This week, GMP said it had no further update to make public on those details.
The force is still keeping an “open mind” as to the woman’s cause of death.
DI Louise Edwards said: “We are determined to reunite this woman with her family and friends and establish the cause of her death.”
Edwards added: “I would urge anyone with information to please come forward.”
Anyone with any information can contact police on 101 quoting log number 1191 of 21/03/24.

Influencer mum changes newborn son’s name, but insists she did so BEFORE people pointed out the ‘VJ’ blunder
AN INFLUENCER has changed her newborn son’s name after realising that he’d be undoubtedly mocked over his original moniker.
Poppy and Jay Hollins recently welcomed a baby boy, and had announced in a YouTube video that they were going to be calling him Vinnie Jay.
Poppy and Jay have revealed they’ve changed their newborn son’s name[/caption] They’d originally chosen to call him Vinnie Jay, but were bombarded by people pointing out the ‘VJ’ nickname[/caption]They had come up with the name after much debate, as Poppy had wanted to name him Vinnie, while Jay was keen to name his son after himself.
So they eventually settled on a double-barrelled name.
“Little VJ!” Jay laughed.
Poppy then giggled, and said: “I feel like he’ll be a rapper or something when he’s older.
“VJ!”
But when the video was shared, people took issue with the moniker, with one writing: “Vay jay jay”.
“Literally the first thing that came to my mind,” another laughed.
“Instantly thought of this,” a third commented.
“That was my first thought,” someone else agreed.
So, in a new YouTube video, Poppy and Jay revealed they’d changed their mind – but not because of the comments people had been making.
“We decided to change his name before we even saw that,” Jay said, referring to the backlash surrounding the VJ name.
“So we decided… cos Jay has never been that keen on Vinnie, and I’m not keen on Jay…” Poppy continued.
“I love Vinnie though, I really love the name Vinnie!”
“I don’t,” Jay piped up, as his other half continued: “But I just don’t know if he is Vinnie!”
But one person wrote in the comments on the YouTube video, writing: “Why can’t they just admit that’s why they changed the name?
“Just laugh about it and chill!”
Banned Names in the UK
The UK has no law restricting names, but names that contain obscenities, numerals, misleading titles, or are impossible to pronounce are likely to be rejected when registering a child.
- Hitler
- Monkey
- Cyanide
- Martian
- Akuma
- Chow Tow
- Rogue
Someone else urged the pair to “stop being so secretive” about the new name, while another said: “He looks like a Freddie or an Oscar!”
But someone else said that the couple seemed to have settled on a name during a recent live.
“They said on their live they wanted to name him either Cole or Jude,” they wrote.
“And decided on Jude Jay Porter by the end of the live, nickname JJ, but I’m not 100% sure if they kept the name.”
