Coronation Street star confirms he’s quit the soap after fans hit out at character’s disappearance

CORONATION Street star Chris Harper has confirmed he has quit the soap after his brief comeback as Nathan Curtis.

The actor – who plays abuser Nathan in the ITV soap – reprised his role earlier this year as part of the Lauren Bolton mystery and it brought him back to survivor Bethany Platt.

Viewers watched as Nathan tried once again to terrorise Bethany, and eventually came a cropper when Sarah Platt and Kit Green framed him for Lauren’s murder.

But when Lauren returned alive, the real culprit Joel Deering manipulated her into pinning everything on Nathan to ensure his own freedom.

But now the police are questioning Joel over what happened to Lauren, Nathan could be released – but that won’t mean he’ll be back in Weatherfield.

Actor Chris has confirmed he is not returning as Nathan for this storyline.

“No, I’m definitely not going back,” he told Digital Spy.

“But never say never, I suppose! I genuinely do not want him to have a forgiveness arc. So, I don’t know why he’d keep coming back to Weatherfield.

“It’s Bethany’s journey, not his. It’s got to be about Bethany’s life, and I think he’s done his time.

“But if you could get Sally Wainwright to write something between Joel and Nathan, and it was past nine o’clock, I think it would be worth doing!”

It comes as fans hit out at the return calling it “contrived”.

One wrote: “I wonder if he will ever be mentioned again, seemed like a bit of a waste to just bring him back for a handful of episodes.

“It would’ve been interesting to see some sort of ‘closure’ between him and Bethany if the images hadn’t been his. Maybe Nathan agreeing to move away etc.”

A second said: “It was a strange arc, especially when you add in Gary randomly assaulting him. It all felt like contrived drama for the sake of it.”

Coronation Street's 2024 shock exits

Corrie has said goodbye to several cast members this year. Let's break down who's left the famous soap:

Eliza Woodrow (Savannah Kunyo) has said farewell to Corrie to start a new life in Germany.

The youngster moved to live with her dad Dom Everett, who went back on the £10,000 bribe Eliza’s grandfather Stu had offered to keep him out of her life.

Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) will bow out of the soap this summer when he loses his fight with motor neurone disease (MND) in tragic scenes.

After being diagnosed last year, the fan favourite was devastated to learn he only had months left to live.

Viewers know he is planning to take his own life to end his suffering.

Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby) departed the cobbles after being offered the opportunity of a lifetime to study in America.

Though she struggled to decide with her stepdad Paul’s impending death from MND, she was convinced she had to live her life to the full.

Simon Barlow (Alex Bain) has struggled with the sudden departure of his father Peter from the cobbles.

The Weatherfield legend left his family and loved ones behind on Boxing Day, 2023, when his wife Carla Connor encouraged him to travel around the world with a friend.

Simon’s been on a downward spiral ever since and his exit could end in tragedy.

Alya Nazir is set to leave the cobbles as actress Sair Khan prepares to go on maternity leave ahead of the birth of her first child.

It looks likely she’ll be heading to Dublin after securing a lucrative new job, leaving her colleague and fling Adam Barlow behind.

Show stalwart Sue Cleaver, who plays Eileen Grimshaw, is taking a break to star in the Sister Act The Musical UK tour. She will be back filming in May once her dates on the tour come to an end.

Her character left the Street after her son Jason broke his back after falling off a moped in Asia.

Another added: “Feels like they only brought him back for shock value.

“I remember thinking he was going to come back apologetic, or in denial protesting his innocence, and neither of those things happened.”

Matt Parcell snubs Super League interest for Australia return amid rule plea

MATT Parcell hopes to build a new career after turning down Super League interest to return to Australia.

The Hull KR hooker is leaving at the end of a season that could still end with Grand Final glory.

Even though he is officially a British citizen – although still counting on the overseas quota because of rules he feels should be changed – he is heading back Down Under.

Now if an NRL offer does not come up, it is likely he will forge a career in property after snubbing interest to play on in this country.

Parcell said: “I’ve had Super League clubs contact me and that’s been great – but this is a good time to finish over here.

“I can’t see myself playing part-time, so if an NRL offer doesn’t pop up I think I’ll do something in property – whether that’s development or project management, I really enjoy that side of things.

“Clubs help you get permanent residency but then there’s no incentive for them to help you get citizenship. You’re still a quota spot.

“I know players who’ve been here for nine years but haven’t got their citizenship. Introducing a rule would be a great thing as clubs would benefit.

“If you commit six or seven years to the Super League, that’s the bulk of your career. So you deserve to be off the quota.

“After five years, you can apply for indefinite leave to remain, so you have to sit the test to do that – one question would be basic then the next would be, ‘Back in 1496….’

“But you have to hold that for another 12 months before you can apply for citizenship. Once you do that, it can take up to another six months. Along the way, there are boxes you have to tick.”

Rovers’ campaign will see a top two finish if they defeat Leeds tonight as Willie Peters’ men aim for the Super League title.

And ironically, the feeling among the squad now is similar to that of the 2017 Rhinos he joined and won glory with at Old Trafford.

The 31-year-old added: “I do, the big thing about having a good squad is having confidence. Over the last eight weeks, we’ve showed we’re a good team.

“We can defend strongly, we’re hard to beat and that’s a big thing. As a squad, we probably don’t have as much experience in finals as others but it’s about doing what we’ve been doing all year.”

In a sign of how far Hull KR have developed, Coldplay will perform two gigs at Craven Park next year.

Not even that prospect, though, could tempt Parcell to change his mind as he continued: “I’m gutted! That’s pretty cool.”

England stars upset at being charged commission by PFA for doing commercial work on international duty

ENGLAND players are not happy at having to pay 10 per cent commission to the PFA on commercial work during international duty.

The players’ union took over responsibility for negotiating Three Lions stars’ sponsorship and endorsement deals before last summer’s Euros in Germany.

Promoting commercial partners such as Budweiser comes with a fee whilst on international duty[/caption]

PFA chiefs also agreed to help them during negotiations with the FA over fees for personal appearances to promote commercial partners such as Nike and Budweiser.

The new deal is thought to have been struck on behalf of the squad late last season by England’s senior leadership team — led by captain Harry Kane.

But a number of players are understood to have been surprised to learn in recent weeks that they agreed to pay a 10 per cent fee to the PFA.

SunSport understands this issue was raised when England met up for Nations League duty earlier this month.

Yet there is no appetite to renegotiate the contract.

Many players assumed the PFA were obliged to act on their behalf — or at least would offer a discount on commission.

The PFA declined to comment, but sources close to the union told SunSport that a 10 per cent rate was standard practice across the industry, with the money required to cover their costs.

In addition to negotiating with potential sponsors and the FA, the union’s legal team will also provide support to the players.

FOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALS

Three Lions stars’ commercial dealings have been shrouded in controversy for years, much of which surrounds Gareth Southgate’s former agent Terry Byrne.

He negotiated a 14-year deal with the FA to represent the squad — but was paid off last season amid a long-running dispute.

The FA declined to comment.

Harry Kane reveals his favourite England goals

HARRY KANE is already England’s all-time record goalscorer.

But the Three Lions skipper will NOT be stopping there.

To mark his 100th cap for his country, Kane spoke to SunSport’s CHARLIE WYETT about some of his special England goals….

FIRST ENGLAND GOAL

“My debut v Lithuania. March 2015.

“There was a lot of talk in the build-up to that camp because I was playing well for Spurs.

“I got a great reception and within a couple of minutes I scored a goal.

“I don’t think I could have dreamed it any better.

“My friends and family were there. That was a really special night.”

FAVOURITE ENGLAND GOAL

“It’s between two, for me.

“Against Germany, the one at Wembley in Euro 2020.

“Also, the header against Tunisia at the World Cup in 2018.

“That moment of scoring a last-minute winner at my first World Cup was special.”

BEST ENGLAND GOAL

“The one I scored in Poland away in a World Cup qualifier in 2021. It was from 25 yards.”

(Kane picked up the ball from Kyle Walker, advanced towards goal and put his foot through it.)

“It kind of drifted away and it was a good strike, probably my furthest-out goal for England.”

Dad-of-two ‘paid hitman neighbour £1.5k to kill his wife – then kicked off when he saw her still breathing on beach’

A DAD paid a hitman £1,500 to kill his wife – then kicked off when he saw her “still breathing” on a beach, a court heard.

Paul Lewis, 54, allegedly handed over the cash “in good faith” to bump off his estranged wife of ten years Joanne Atkinson-Lewis.

He gave neighbour Dominique Saunders £1,500, jurors were told[/caption]

Neighbour Dominique Saunders, 34, took the bounty and vowed to hire a hitman to do the job before claiming he had images of the so-called killing, jurors heard.

But the following day, Lewis saw Joanne “still breathing” while walking on Aberavon beach in Wales.

Swansea Crown Court heard he messaged Saunders due to his “increasing frustration” – but was told to “grow a pair” and sort his own problems out.

Saunders carried out Google searches for guns, coffins, car hire, Charles Bronson and “Vince from Swansea who killed a person”.

He also searched post codes in Port Talbot where Joanne lived, the court was told.

His alleged scheming was exposed when the couple’s son Keiran Lewis went to his dad’s home in April 2023 and asked him outright.

He told jurors: “I asked him bluntly whether he had put a hit out on Joanne. He nodded in response.

“With my father’s permission I began looking through his phone and as I did so he mentioned something about Dominique sorting it out.

“That’s when I understood there was more than just him involved in this.”

In her own evidence, Joanne told how her “very old fashioned” husband was never violent but would “turn things” to make them her fault.

She said Lewis left the family home in January 2021 before messaging her six weeks later saying he wanted a divorce.

The couple had been together for 16 years and married for ten before splitting.

The court was told Lewis was diagnosed with complex PTSD, was on medication for depression and he had been a patient at a psychiatric hospital before the alleged murder plot.

Paul Lewis and Dominique Saunders, both of Swansea, deny conspiracy to commit murder.

The trial continues.
