THERE are seven upcoming money changes that should ease the pain on people's pockets this month, including a €462 payment set to be paid in just weeks.

Electricity & Gas Price Cut

Electric Ireland has confirmed that it will cut its electricity and gas prices from November 1.

The country’s biggest electricity provider confirmed that both its standard unit rate of electricity and standard gas rate will be reduced by three per cent for over 1.2 million customers.

This will save households around €45 a year on their electricity and €40 a year on their gas on average.

Clothing and Footwear Allowance

The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance is a payment to help families buy clothing and shoes for their children returning to school.

Children ages four to 11 are eligible for a payment rate of €160 while a child aged 12 to 22 will see a payment of €285.

Most eligible parents will have had to allowance paid out automatically – but you can apply up until September 30 on your My Welfare account if you have not received it.

Fuel Allowance

The Fuel Allowance is a major payment aimed at covering the cost of heating your home for a 28 week period from September to April and will be paid out to thousands on September 23, 2024.

To qualify for the payment you must be over 70 or getting a qualifying social welfare payment and satisfy a means test while living alone or with one of the exceptions listed here.

It can be paid out for 28 weeks in €33 payments which you will receive with your other social welfare payments but people can opt to receive the amount in two lump sums of €462.

Student Grants

Maintenance grants for students are set to increase by €615 for all non-adjacent rates and by 10 per cent for adjacent rates.

There is also changes to the postgraduate tuition fee grant which will increase by €1,000 for students in the 2023/2024 academic year.

And students who qualify for the Free Fees Scheme, will see the Student Contribution be reduced by €1,000 in the 2023/2024 academic year. Those who have already paid will receive a refund.

From this month the income threshold to qualify for the 100 per cent Student Contribution will increase to €55,924.

Hot School Meals

In July, Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys announced an additional 168 primary schools would receive Hot School Meals in the term starting in September 2024.

This means 345,000 primary school children are now eligible to receive hot school lunches.

Childcare Scheme

The National Childcare Scheme’s subsidy, which can be used with any childcare provider who is participating and it paid directly to them, will increase from this month.

From September 2, 2024 the minimum rate for the National Childcare Scheme subsidies increased from €1.40 to €2.14 per hour.

Free Book Scheme

An extension of the Free School Books Scheme means parents and guardians of students in Junior Cycle years in post-primary schools should not be asked to buy or rent any school books in the 2024/2025 school year under the scheme.

This applies to students enrolled in secondary schools in the Free Education Scheme and will see free schoolbooks and core classroom resources provided.

Born on August 3, 1981, Gemma Bird is a money Influencer, columnist and best-selling author.

After pulling herself out of debt, she used her cash saving hacks to build herself a career and at the same time help others.

After initially working as an estate agent, she realised she had a gift when it came to making the most of her money and became an influencer.

In 2019, she sent up her Instagram page @Moneymumofficial to share her money-making and saving tips.

Gemma revealed how it took a year of posting daily on the handle – which now boasts over 450K followers – to become a success.

In 2020, she started her “Gemma’s No Spend Days” on social media, which massively took off.

Following this success she got a book deal, and her Sunday Times bestseller, Money Mum Official: Save Yourself Happy, came out in January 2022.

Shortly after this Gemma was snapped up by ITV‘s Lorraine, where she regularly dishes out her money saving tips

Making money

Now that Gemma is debt free herself she decided to do social media as a full-time career.

Thanks to this, she was able to pay off her mortgage by the age of 42.

She also makes her money through sales of her book.

Gemma is also a popular columnist for The Sun, where readers flock to get her top tips on how they save the pennies.

Speaking about her knack for money, she told The Sun: “I’ve always been financially savvy, largely thanks to my parents Jayne who was a stay-at-home mum when I was growing up in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, and Steve who worked in the bus industry.

“When I was 16-18, they used to give me £50 a month pocket money and once it was gone, that was it.

“It got me into a great mindset and also made me determined to be independent and earn my own money.

Although we are financially secure and have no mortgage, I’m determined to follow in my parents’ footsteps and teach my children the value of money.

Gemma Bird

“Aged 14, I got paid for picking mushrooms before school, and by 18 I was working full-time as an estate agent.

“I saved 80% of my salary every month while living at home with my parents, and the rest I’d spend.”

Happy family

Gemma met her second husband Adam on a dating app in 2011, just before she turned 30.

A month after meeting him, they had moved into together, and a year later their son Brody was born.

In 2014 they got married, and five years later, their daughter Bronte, came along.

Speaking about her husband she told The Sun: “Our marriage works because Adam, a stay-at-home dad, and I share the same core values, including being good with money.

“Although we are financially secure and have no mortgage, I’m determined to follow in my parents’ footsteps and teach my children the value of money.”

Gemma also revealed that she is teaching her children about the value of money.

She said: “Brody gets £2 a week, and if he spends it, he doesn’t get more.

“Recently, he went to the newsagent and bought a bottle of Prime.

“After, he was stressed about having spent his allowance, which was a valuable lesson.

“As a society, we need to talk more openly and honestly about money – we need to understand it.

Gemma’s top five money-saving tips

1. Move the odd amount every day into a savings account. So, if you have £203 in your current account, transfer the £3.

2. When shopping online, add everything to your basket but don’t buy it. Come back two days later – you’ll find you remove things you don’t actually want or need.

3. To save around £300 a year on your energy bills, boil your kettle once a day. Fill it up using six cups of water, boil, then pour into a Thermos. You then have water to use throughout the day instead of boiling multiple times.

4. Make money on your old clothes in minutes by taking a bag of any size clothing into an H&M store. Simply hand it over and they will recycle the items and give you a £5 voucher to use in store. You need to download the app, which is free, and you build points to get money off.

5. The heavier your car, the more fuel it will use, so take off the roof rack and unload the boot. Google petrol prices in your area, and arrange to do your trip to the cheapest garage when you are driving nearby, so that you won’t be wasting fuel in order to refuel.
