I’m a Veterinarian and I’d Never Own These 5 Dog Breeds—With 1 Exception

Any dog owner will go on the record to vouch that theirs is the best breed on the planet. But when it comes to a dog’s health chart, some breeds earn more stars than others. Alex Crow is a veterinarian living in the U.K. who has treated a wide variety of dog breeds at his clinic. In a new "controversial" TikTok video, Crow called out five breeds he’d never own based on hereditary disposition and recurring health issues he’s seen on his operating table.

"Many of the reasons I wouldn’t have these breeds is due to their genetics and the way they have been bred. Many traits that we, as humans, consider cute, such as flat faces or wrinkly skin, lead to suffering of these animals. There should be more education around what taking one of these breeds of dog on involves,” he wrote in the caption.

While Crow has “no hate on these dogs,” he would advise against buying these breeds as puppies. However, he does have one exception to this rule. “This is different to if I were ADOPTING one of these dogs. I would happily adopt one of these breeds of dog if I knew I could give it a better life and make adjustments for their genetic limitations,” he continued.

That said, here are five dog breeds Crow would never buy as a puppy or from a breeder.

1. Shar-Pei

“While many people find their wrinkles adorable, they can lead to serious skin infections as bacteria gets stuck between the folds and mesters,” explained Crow. Shar-Peis are also prone to ear infections, and due to their facial structure, they often require reconstruction surgery that’s “similar to a facelift,” he warned.

Additionally, Shar-Peis may have a hereditary condition called Shar-Pei Fever. “Affected dogs experience recurrent episodes of fever and inflammation, with no identifiable underlying cause. This causes the dog to feel ill and uncomfortable,” according to VCA Animal Hospitals.

About one in four Shar-Pei dogs will develop this syndrome. And while Shar-Pei Fever is treatable, it can lead to other serious health issues like kidney failure.

2. Flat-faced dogs like Frenchies, Pugs, and Bulldogs

Flat-faced dogs like Frenchies, pugs, and bulldogs are "brachycephalic breeds." But don’t let their cute, "smushed" faces fool you—these breeds can rack up a serious vet bill.

“They often can’t breathe properly due to their short, compressed airways and that leads to chronic breathing difficulties, overheating, and acid reflux, which often requires a big invasive surgery just to fix,” explained Crow.

Compared to other breeds, flat-faced dogs get allergies and skin/ear infections more frequently, too. It’s also not unusual for Frenchies, Pugs, and Bulldogs to develop optimal problems “due to their bulging eyes,” added Crow.

3. German Shepherd

Although German Shepherds are recognized by the American Kennel Club as “gentle family pets,” they can be quite feisty and uncontrollable in the wrong living environment.

“They require a lot of exercise and mental stimulation,” Crow told followers, adding that “without it, they can become anxious and develop behavioral issues.”

The breed is also prone to elbow and hip dysplasia, as well as other joint issues, given their size and build.

“This one is very much a personal opinion,” he continued. “I just tend to find that many owners aren’t able to provide them with the lifestyle they need.”

4. Great Dane

Nicknamed the “gentle giant,” Great Danes are prone to a scary heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy. This disease results in “progressive heart muscle dysfunction, chamber dilation, and eventual congestive heart failure or death,” per Upstate Veterinary Specialties.

Plus, large dog breeds, in general, often have shorter lifespans due to their size. For that reason, Crow acknowledged, “I would just find it incredibly tough to say goodbye after a short time.”

5. Dachshund

Dachshunds are also predisposed to a lot of health issues due to their petite frame. “I know it’s a popular [breed], but their long backs and short legs make them prone to severe back problems, including slipped discs,” said Crow.

Leg and joint issues are another thing you should be wary of, as is a hereditary condition called progressive retinal atrophy, which affects the eyes and sometimes causes blindness.

The award was handed out after visits from inspectors who were impressed with the “expansive grounds”, beautiful bedrooms and delicious food.

AA experts said: “Owned by Kim and Andy Murray (the tennis star, who was born in nearby Dunblane), this stunning hotel has been appointed to a luxurious standard.

“Bedrooms have been lovingly restored and include a number of unique suites.

“The hotel has its own chapel, a number of welcoming lounges and a billiards room.

“The modern, light dining space features an open kitchen where guests can observe some masterful cooking in action. Service is delivered to an impeccable standard.”

While the Loch Bay Restaurant in Stein, Isle of Skye, was crowned the best restaurant in Scotland.

Inspectors were blown away by the cosy six-table restaurant that has incredible views of the coast as well as delicious food.

Not only were they impressed by the daily changing menu, but they also loved the French influence on modern Scottish food.

Ex-Man Utd star Phil Jones lifts lid on heartbreaking moment he ‘wanted world to swallow me up’ and realised career over

FORMER Manchester United defender Phil Jones has opened up about the devastating moment he was forced to accept his career was over.

The ex-England international, 32, announced his retirement from football last month, more than two years after playing the last of his 229 matches for the Red Devils.

He featured just 13 times in his final four years at Old Trafford as injuries forced him to be sidelined for long periods.

Now Jones, who earned 27 England caps, has opened up about his last season at Man Utd and the exact point at which his hopes of returning to the pitch were shattered.

Speaking on The High Performance Podcast, he said: “I was really excited, Erik ten Hag had come in, a fresh start, you are out on the grass with your kit on and boots on again.

“I was feeling my knee again a little bit but I thought it has got to go away at some point, it is not just going to stay there forever.

“We were doing a drill around a circuit, you would play the ball, pass it into the net and jog around through the cones in a little warm-up.

“I couldn’t pass the ball with my right foot, a little soft pass, I couldn’t pass the ball. I wanted the world to swallow me up.

“I was thinking this manager has come in and I can’t go in 20 minutes into the session. I got through the session passing the ball with the outside of my left foot.

“I did this turn or sprint and just felt it, and I was like I can’t carry on. At the drinks break I came over to the physio and my words were ‘this is my last training session’.

“To this day it was my last training session.”

Jones joined Man Utd from Blackburn for £16.5million in 2011.

During his 12 years with the Red Devils, he won the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League.

He confirmed immediately after hanging up his boots that he was keen to get into coaching having already completed his badges.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “My career finished shorter than I would have liked.

“I’m glass half full. I have completed my A licence and I want to get out there and challenge myself in coaching.

“Ultimately I want to take charge of a team. I am determined to get there.”

Jones is currently an academy coach at Man Utd’s Carrington training ground.

He has also dipped his toe into punditry and was praised for his contribution to Sky Sports’ broadcast of Man Utd’s draw with Crystal Palace on Saturday.

I made Mrs Hinch’s viral baby gate on a budget – I used a £2.99 The Range buy & wood from B&Q

A DIY fan has made Mrs Hinch’s viral baby gate on a budget using a £2.99 The Range buy and wood from B&Q.

The 27-year-old, who is living alone and wanting to transform her place on a budget, has created a replica of the Queen of cleaning £260 stair gate.

However, one DIY fan has discovered just the trick to make her own stair gate[/caption]

The woman, who is known as @homenumber_3 on TikTok, made it all from using her own DIY hacks and has saved a fortune because of it.

She shared a video of her gate, and explained in a voice over exactly how she did it.

The DIY fan says: “This is a quick stop tutorial on how I made the Mrs Hinch gate for £30.

She first starts off by explaining that she bought the pine wood from B&Q.

The woman continues: “I think it ranges between £4.50 and £11.50, obviously depending on the length that you want.

“And obviously the price will differ depending on how many slats you’d like across.

“It was glued and then screwed together and then sanded over the top.”

She wanted to ensure that you couldn’t see the screws and hinges, which were a “couple of pounds” from B&Q.

The DIY fan continues: “Then the lock, I think, is from Screwfix.

“I found one on there for £2.99.

“I did also have the paint but you can buy paint which is definitely big enough for £2.99 from The Range.

“So you literally need wood, screws and a bolt and a bit of glue and you’re basically there. All for £30.”

Her original video, which showed off the gate, received over 578,000 views, and this specific tutorial video gained over 70,000 views.

Many mums rushed to the comments section to compliment on how nice her gate looked.

Although it is not clear if @homenumber_3 is using it to prevent a child going upstairs, TikTok comments point towards that it could prevent her dog from going upstairs.

When it comes to cleaning, Mrs Hinch has been favoured for her cheap tips and tricks to make life easier.

Mrs Hinch cleaning fans previously revealed a 15p hack to help get rid of the annoying fuzz that is left on your mirrors.

She turned to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips and Tricks Facebook group for assistance from fellow cleaning enthusiasts.

The mother, who posted anonymously, shared a photo of her white porcelain table, which was marred by black, green, and blue permanent marker marks.

Desperately seeking advice, she wrote: “Can someone help me before I throw out my dining table?

“Felt tip pen and permanent marker vs a four-year-old.”

Fortunately, the Mrs Hinch cleaning community was brimming with ideas to help remove the pen marks and quickly flocked to the comments section to offer their suggestions.
