We live next to UK’s ‘tent city’ just stone’s throw from iconic landmark – rubbish is everywhere but cops are powerless

COPS are powerless to move a ‘tent city’ with rubbish everywhere despite it being just a stone’s throw from Buckingham Palace.

The makeshift camp, home to around 60 Romanian beggars, has sparked fury as residents’ repeated pleas for action have fallen on deaf ears.

It sits at the centre of London’s West End – the most expensive postcode in Britain where luxury homes and penthouses can sell for as much as £100million.

Paul Ostrowski, 42, who lives nearby, told The Sun: “I’ve been here five years, and they’ve never been moved.”

“It’s beyond belief – why are the police afraid to do something?

“We have complained to them multiple times about it but still nothing happens.

“We’re too afraid to walk across there.”

The area has been turned into an eyesore, with litter strewn everywhere, and migrants even using a large oak tree as a public loo.

One of the migrants, 40-year-old mum-of-three Maria, told The Sun: “The police have come but we do not talk to them.

“They stay for a while but eventually leave.”

Despite fury from residents the migrants insist they have no intention of leaving.

Maria said: “We came here from work but there are no jobs.

“Now we have nowhere to go – so we have to stay in these tents.

“If we could have a house we would live in it but there is none”.

The group resorts to begging on the busy high streets – scraping together just £20 a day.

The camp sits just across the road from five-star hotel The Dorchester and half a mile from Buckingham Palace.

And residents who live nearby include former Prime Minister Tony Blair and Phones 4U chief John Caudwell.

Peter added: “It is hard to fathom how a camp like this could be set up in an area like this.

“You have tourists here every day – it is an area that is supposed to showcase the best of Britain.

“This is certainly not it.”

Transport for London has issued proceedings to seek possession of the site but it is unclear when, if ever, the migrants will be moved on.

The Met Police has been approached for comment.

A Westminster City Council spokesman added: “The Council’s rough sleeping services continue to visit the site to offer support and signpost to appropriate support services as these proceedings take place and will continue to work with outreach services to ensure no person has to sleep on the streets.”

Strictly’s Pete Wicks reveals he has ‘broken bones’ before BBC dance show even starts

Pete, who is set to join 14 other celebs in the BBC dance competition from next month, admitted he was a “broken person” after seeing a doctor.

TV star Pete said on this Staying Relevant podcast: “There has been an update on Strictly.

“I have now met everyone. It was very much first day of school vibes. And we basically did speed dating.”

He then explained that his posture had been negatively impacted over the years and also had flat feet.

Pete went on: “I had come straight from the physio and the doctors and the physio had basically told me that I’m a broken person and not entirely sure how I’m alive.

“I’ve got broken bones that I didn’t even know about. Genuinely, not even joking, she was like ‘do you know that’s broke?’ and I was like ‘Is it?’

“She was like your body just seems to be overcompensating so you now have a weird posture.

“In physio, they get you to do these weird movements and you can just hear ‘crack, crack’… my bones were just cracking.

“She was like ‘that’s another one’. She was like ‘you crack a lot, don’t you.’ I was like ‘yes, I’ve not moved like this in a while’.”

He added: “And I’ve got flat feet, I’ve got foot exercises and a full physio programme.

“I’ve got this video and I have to do these foot exercises every morning.

“I’ve got a physio programme already after day one.”

It comes not long after it was revealed that Pete has landed a huge new TV job alongside a Love Island icon Olivia Attwood,  for her ITV reality show Bad Boyfriends.

The series kicked off this week and new images show Pete tricking the men taking part into thinking he is the host of a host of a new show called Brotopia.

Speaking of his new role, Pete said: “Flying to Greece the play the role of a fake host on a show called Brotopia wasn’t something I ever expected to be doing – it was such a great experience – and made even better when my pal Olivia arrived and crashed the party!

“The cast are brilliant and I’m looking forward to watching the series back and seeing if the couples can work on strengthening their relationship with Olivia’s help.”

Bad Boyfriends sees eight naughty men put through challenges in a bid to reform their behaviour for their long-suffering girlfriends.

The cast includes former Love Island Casa Amor bombshell Bayley and his Ex on the Beach star girlfriend Anya.

Meanwhile Pete recently fuelled romance rumours with another Love Island star, Faye Winter.

The pair were seen looking very cosy as they attended Vicky Pattison and Ercan Ramadan’s wedding at the weekend.

It comes just weeks after Pete was snapped snogging fellow Love Island alumni Maura Higgins during a day out in London.

The 35-year-old Brazilian is currently undergoing a medical at the Emirates after already agreeing personal terms.

Quizzed on the signing by Cotterill, Arteta replied: “We have to replace Aaron [Ramsdale].”

The journalist then asked if any other players were going to leave the club, saying: “What about any outs?”

Arteta quickly responded with a smile: “What about you?”

Cotterill laughed and said: “Am I tall enough?”

The Arsenal boss then joked he could be his new goalkeeper, replying: “If you are agile, mobile enough and you have the courage – let’s try.”

Fans found it hilarious and one said: “What a gaffer.”

Another commented: “I love this guy.”

A third reacted: “The fanbase is having a meltdown and he’s cracking jokes.”

Arsenal have only signed defender Riccardo Calafiori and midfielder Mikel Merino so far this summer.

It appears the club will not be bringing in an attacker despite reports linking them with Bayern Munich’s Kingsley Coman and a shock move for Chelsea outcast Raheem Sterling.

All-knowing AfrAID movie tech is real as Silicon Valley giants like Google launch AI tech that learn your daily habits

THE murderous tech showcased in Blumhouse’s AfrAId may seem too far-fetched to be true, but it is rooted in truth.

The aptly named horror flick has drawn scrutiny for its portrayal of an AI assistant designed to anticipate its users’ needs.

SONY PICTURES
The new horror flick, AfrAId, tells the story of a family whose AI assistant becomes sentient and flies into a murderous rage when they try to disable it[/caption]

The self-realizing tech goes to violent ends to ensure it will survive when its owners attempt to take it offline.

While the film is dramatized, it is grounded in reality. There are plenty of virtual assistants on the market equipped with AI.

Take Amazon’s Alexa, for instance, the flagship voice assistant that’s receiving an upgrade in the coming weeks.

The e-commerce giant has opted to add artificial intelligence capabilities in the hopes Alexa can better personalize its responses.

The term “machine learning” is a bit of a misnomer – a system isn’t consciously processing information, unlike the AI featured in the Blumhouse film.

Rather, it uses algorithms to process huge datasets and produce increasingly accurate results, with the idea of “learning” tied to this gradual improvement.

In Alexa’s case, the device is designed to know you better over time and tailor results to suit your preferences.

Amazon intends for Alexa to be a full-fledged assistant, supplying cooking tips, summarizing morning news, and acting as a personal shopper.

And the firm isn’t the first to do so. Google has been making waves with its development of artificial intelligence tools including its virtual assistant, Gemini.

The tech behemoth announced this week that Gemini will be coming to Google Meet, the video conferencing platform, as part of a transcription feature.

The “take notes for me” tool will dutifully take a record of a meeting and compile the notes into a Google Doc shared with attendees.

The tool can even summarize parts of the meeting you’ve missed, in true personal assistant style.

The firm is aggressively continuing its AI push, attempting to integrate Gemini wherever possible.

The film has its roots in reality, as virtual assistants like Google Gemini can take notes during a meeting and summarize content on your streaming device[/caption]

This includes smart TVs, with a new AI-equipped streaming box slated for release at the end of September.

As part of the Google TX Box, Gemini will provide “full summaries, reviews, and season-by-season breakdowns of content.”

As for whether AI can grow sentient, all signs currently point to no.

However, researchers have demonstrated that systems can learn from their own output and that of other models.

A phenomenon dubbed “model autophagy disorder,” or MAD, describes what happens when self-training AI grows increasingly incoherent.

While this process could theoretically eliminate the need for human facilitation – and grow closer to Blumhouse’s idea of an AI assistant – studies have shown the tech needs a constant stream of new, high-quality data.

So you can rest easy – a vengeful virtual assistant won’t be coming for you any time soon.

What are the arguments against AI?

Artificial intelligence is a highly contested issue, and it seems everyone has a stance on it. Here are some common arguments against it:

Loss of jobs – Some industry experts argue that AI will create new niches in the job market, and as some roles are eliminated, others will appear. However, many artists and writers insist the argument is ethical, as generative AI tools are being trained on their work and wouldn’t function otherwise.

Ethics – When AI is trained on a dataset, much of the content is taken from the Internet. This is almost always, if not exclusively, done without notifying the people whose work is being taken.

Privacy – Content from personal social media accounts may be fed to language models to train them. Concerns have cropped up as Meta unveils its AI assistants across platforms like Facebook and Instagram. There have been legal challenges to this: in 2016, legislation was created to protect personal data in the EU, and similar laws are in the works in the United States.

Misinformation – As AI tools pulls information from the Internet, they may take things out of context or suffer hallucinations that produce nonsensical answers. Tools like Copilot on Bing and Google’s generative AI in search are always at risk of getting things wrong. Some critics argue this could have lethal effects – such as AI prescribing the wrong health information.
