Chelsea vs Crystal Palace preview

One step forward, two steps back?

It looks as though it’s going to take a while to get some consistency from Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea.

The Blues followed their opening defeat to Manchester City with victory over Servette and a comprehensive 6-2 thrashing of Wolves at Molineux.

But just as the momentum started, they suffered a surprise 2-1 loss in their Europa Conference League play-off in Switzerland.

Chelsea still progressed, but supporters and punters alike are still unclear as to what they’re going to get from the west London outfit.

Many considered Crystal Palace to be “dark horses” heading into the 2024-25 campaign after their stellar end to last season.

But they haven’t picked up where they left off, in fact they’ve suffered back-to-back defeats to Brentford and West Ham, netting just once in 180 minutes.

But it’s not all doom and gloom for Oliver Glasner’s side, who have perhaps been a touch unfortunate.

They should also be buoyed by their 4-0 Carabao Cup win over Norwich with Daichi Kamada, Eberechi Eze and Jean-Philippe Mateta all getting on the scoresheet.

When is Chelsea vs Crystal Palace?

  • Chelsea vs Crystal Palace will take place on Sunday, September 1
  • It is scheduled to kick off at 1:30pm BST
  • The encounter will take place at Stamford Bridge, London

What TV channel is it on can it be live streamed?

  • Chelsea vs Crystal Palace will be broadcast LIVE on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League.
  • Subscription members can stream the entire action on the Sky Go app.
  • Alternatively, SunSport will have minute-by-minute coverage of the whole match.

What is the team news?

Chelsea’s Reece James will miss the contest through injury, while we’re unlikely to see Romeo Lavia in the middle of the park as he nurses a minor hamstring injury.

Christopher Nkunku and Noni Madueke both started on Thursday night, but aside from that Enzo Maresca is not likely to make too many changes to the team which thumped Wolves.

Defender Chadi Riad went off in the Carabao Cup win over Norwich, leaving Crystal Palace with only Chris Richards, Marc Guehi and Rob Holding as centre-back options.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace betting tips and predictions

Win and BTTS

Only three sides have underperformed their xG more than Crystal Palace (-1.52) while only four have created more chances than their 28 in the opening two fixtures.

Meanwhile Chelsea are on the opposite end of the scale having over performed their xG by 3.31 – almost double that of any other top-flight side.

Both sides rank in the top for for missed tackles this season, while Chelsea have been punished for those with three errors leading to goals – again, the most in the division.

However, Chelsea have won each of their last 13 Premier League games against Crystal Palace, so a home win with both teams to score looks a good selection.

  • Chelsea to win and both teams to score at 9/5 with William Hill – CLAIM HERE

Cold Palmer

It’s not the most electrifying selection, but it’s extremely difficult to back against Cole Palmer getting on the scoresheet this weekend.

The England international, 22, has scored once and provided three assists in four outings and netted 27 in all competitions last season. He’s the designated penalty taker and the Blues have received two of those in their last four matches.

  • Cole Palmer first goalscorer at 4/1 with William Hill – CLAIM HERE

Mums reveal savvy tip for getting last-minute school uniform when all the shops are sold out & it’ll save you cash too

THE mad rush to buy uniform and all the other back-to-school essentials this time of year can be a daunting prospect.

Items can sell out before many parents have even thought about stocking up for the new term.

Zoe and Georgia confessed they have different approaches when it comes to stocking up on school uniform[/caption]

The cost of uniform can quickly stack up, especailly for parents with more than one little on heading back-to-school[/caption]

Luckily, presenter and Heart FM DJ Zoe Hardman and PR pro Georgia Dayton have shared their solutions to all your school uniform problems – and their trick will save you cash too.

Zoe and Georgia are no strangers to solving listener dilemmas on their podcast, Made by Mammas, where one mum confessed she’d left it a little late to buy her uniforms this year.

She wrote into the show saying: “Why is everything out of stock?”

It’s a problem Zoe has encountered too: “Oh my god. This was my reality this morning, everything was out of stock,” she said.

Georgia added that the reason for the lack of stock could be down to the 3-for-2 offers at the end of the previous school term, meaning lots of parents stocked up while they could get a good deal.

Not one to let a bargain pass her by, Georgia snapped up summer dresses, playsuits, skirts, pinafores and more for her daughter who is starting her first year of primary school this September.

Jumping on uniform deals is a good idea, no matter the time of year even if that means investing in shirts, trousers and skirts a size or two up from your child’s current size.

Despite her success with bagging everything her daughter could possibly need, Georgia did also have a handy tip for other parents who weren’t so lucky.

“If you’re really struggling, contact the school because there will be nearly new stuff that people like Zoe and I who also have older kids will be dropping off,” she explained.

The little-known way for parents to get cheap school uniform

Recent research by the Children’s Society estimated that parents spend £422 a year on uniforms for a child at secondary school, and £287 for primary school children.

This cost can put a strain on a household’s budget, but there are cheaper – and even free – alternatives to get items such as clothing and bags.

School uniform exchanges offered by local councils, charities, schools and even Facebook groups are a great way for parents to cut costs.

Parents usually have to swap items in order to get clothes for free, while other schemes charge a small amount such as £1 per item.

The exchanges are also an environmentally friendly option as it cuts down landfill waste and saves items of clothing including cotton and synthetics from being thrown away.

Search online to find out if you have a local school uniform exchange.

Level Trust runs an online uniform exchange with over 60 schools across the UK.

Parents can swap clothes for alternative items or get a gift card to use in the future.

Items are free and you can order online and collect from your school.

Back to school deals to be had

SEVERAL major supermarkets and retailers are set to launch their sell-out uniform deals.

Prices for the bundles and offers start at just £5

Among the chains offering bargain deals on kids’ uniforms are Aldi, Marks and Spencer, and Tesco.

Asda
Asda’s George range offers the following key pieces:
Boys Uniform

  • 2-pack polo shirt – regular fit or 2pk short sleeves shirt – from £3
  • 2-pack slim leg adjustable waist trousers – from £8
  • 2-pack basic sweatshirt – from £5
  • Black double strap cupsole school shoes – from £10

Girls Uniform

  • 2-pack scallop polo shirt – regular fit or 2 pack short sleeve shirt – from £3
  • 2-pack pleated skirt – from £8
  • 2-pack basic cardigan – from £8
  • 2 pack short sleeve shirts – from £5
  • 2-pack white short sleeve school polo shirts – from £3

Peacocks
Discount fashion retailer Peacocks is offering its cheap uniform range in all stores with 20% off from July 28.
Its kids’ uniform goes from age 2-3 up to age 14-15 years, which is a new age range for this year.
Among its key items are:

  • Kids blouse – £5/£6/£7
  • Kids polo 2-pack – £6/£7/£8
  • Kids skinny trousers – £9/£10/£11
  • Kids bootcut trousers – £9/£10/£11
  • Kids Bengaline super skinny trousers – £8/£9/£10

M&S
M&S has held prices on its school uniform since 2021 and has confirmed the return of its popular 20% off school uniform early bird offer from July 2.
You can get the discount by shopping online or in stores where uniform is stocked.
Some examples of its range include:

  • From £7 for a 3 pack of 100% responsibly sourced cotton unisex polo shirts, featuring stain-resistant technology
  • From £11 for 2pk Boys’ Slim Leg School Trousers
  • From £12 for 2pk Girls’ Pleated School Pinafores

Tesco
Tesco is bringing back its 25% off uniform deal again this year, the sale starts on July 23.
It doesn’t tend to run for a long time, so it might be a good idea to stock up while you can.
You need to ensure you have your Tesco Clubcard or app when you get to the till so the discount is applied.
Tesco is yet to reveal the exact items available in the offer.

Sainsbury’s
Sainsbury’s says it has maintained its 2022 prices on its school uniform.
It is said to be introducing its 25% off sale on June 19.
Last year you could pick up two packs of polo shirts starting from £3, trousers from £4 and two packs of gingham dresses from £10 both online and in stores.

EXTRA HELP WITH SCHOOL UNIFORM COSTS

IF you can't get targeted help from your council, you might have some other options available to you.

In some areas, you can talk directly to your school, which might be able to offer you clothing.

Or, you might be able to get cheap garments from low-budget shops or charity stores.

Some charities offer help to families in need too.

But bear in mind charities often have a limited amount of money to give and usually have specific criteria which must be met in order to get a grant.

Charity Turn2Us has a free grants search tool on its website which you can use to find out what help is available to you.

Meanwhile, you can always try approaching your nearest Citizens’ Advice branch.

If you don’t know where your nearest Citizens’ Advice branch is, you can find out by visiting www.citizensadvice.org.uk/about-us/contact-us/nearby/.

If you’re not eligible for a school uniform grant you might be able to get help through the Household Support Fund.

I’m a single mum-of-4 & was heartbroken when I learned the truth about our £500 caravan trip – we had to sleep in my car

A SINGLE mum has been left heartbroken after being scammed out of hundreds of pounds when booking a summer holiday – leaving her to sleep in her car with her kids.

Nicola Smith drove 58 miles with her four children to enjoy a summer trip for the first time in two years – only to discover she’d been tricked.

The 34-year-old found an eight-berth caravan for rent last month on Facebook, paying a private individual £500 to use it at Lyons Winkups Holiday Park in Towyn, Wales.

She claims to have paid the owner for a week’s stay with her children; Keisha, 16, Cam-ron, 14, Isla, eight, and Faith, four.

The family travelled from Nantwich, Cheshire, to the caravan site on 17 August – where their holiday hell soon began.

Nicola was shocked when she discovered the caravan she had booked was occupied by other guests.

“We were supposed to get the key to the caravan from a lock box but the code didn’t work,” Nicola said.

“The lights were on and we looked through the window and there were suitcases in there.

“I went to reception and they called the owner who said they’d never heard of me.

“When I realised it was a scam, I felt sick to my stomach.

“It was about 9.30pm and all hotels in the area were fully booked.

“I had to park in a car park, put the seats down and sleep with my kids in there.

“It’s lucky we had blankets.

I had to keep the engine running all night to keep warm.

“I felt so angry. How could someone do that to a single mother?

“I was sad for the children and so frustrating.

Why caravan holidays are so underrated

CARAVAN park holidays are a British staple.

And with the cost of living crisis wreaking havoc on Britain’s purses, more of us are turning to them for an affordable break.

Josie O’Brien, Senior Digital Writer on Fabulous, weighs in on why she thinks caravan holidays are seriously underrated…

WHEN I was a child, my mum used to collect the £9.50 holiday vouchers in The Sun.

She’d use them to book a couple of nights away at a caravan park during the school holidays.

As an adult, I fully appreciate the convenience of a humble caravan holiday.

No faffing about with passports, no luggage limits and no bog-standard hotel breakfast of stale toast and grey eggs.

I still love caravan holidays as an adult.

In a world of doing everything for the ‘gram, a caravan park brings you back to basics.

There’s no obligation to get dressed up, no stress to fit a million picturesque excursions in one week and I don’t find myself flustered in tourist hot spots like abroad.

I love going to coastal caravan parks and strolling along the beach parade.

My highlight is always fresh mussels, ice-creams and classic pubs to grab an afternoon tipple in.

And then, of course, there’s the cost.

Staying in a caravan is definitely way cheaper than my international trips.

With no expensive hotel bills and the ability to cook my own meals, I’m spending hundreds less than I would abroad.

I’ve had some of my best and most relaxing holidays in caravans. Maybe I’ll buy my own one day.

“Scammers are so desperate to try and get money out of someone.”

When first booking the caravan, Nicola had a “gut instinct” that something was wrong.

She claims to have called the site before paying the deposit and was reportedly told that the owner of the van had the same name the scammer had given.

Satisfied with this information, Nicola transferred money to the scammer via Paypal.

An exchange of messages show the con artist reassuring the mum that nothing is amiss, even sharing “caravan insurance documents” and saying “We are not scammers in the slightest as I’ve stated”.

Nicola said: “I had a gut instinct that something was wrong.

“They weren’t really chasing me up for payment.

“They wanted me to pay through ‘PayPal Friends and Family’ rather than Business so I called up the site.

“The scammer had likely stayed at the caravan park themselves and found out the owner’s name.

“It’s understandable that the caravan park confirmed the name of the person, since the con artist had this info.

“I tried to check everything as best I could but what else could I have done?”

The next day, Nicola forked out £439 for a Travelodge for two nights so the children could go to the beach and fun fair, before driving home.

Nicola added: “We were squished into one room.

“I shared a bed with Keisha and Isla, Faith was in a travel cot and Cam-ron was in a bed on his own.

“We wanted to go abroad but I can’t afford it.

“It was our first holiday in two years.

“It took me a long time to save up for the holiday with the cost of living and I’ve got four children.

“We had to spend our spending money on the hotel.

“I feel heartbroken.”
