Strictly’s Vito Coppola breaks silence on returning to scandal-hit BBC show – and what will save it

STRICTLY Come Dancing star Vito Coppola has broken his silence on what will save the scandal-hit BBC show.

The pro dancer made a firm mark on the dancefloor after scooping up the Glitterball trophy with his celeb partner, Coronation Street star Ellie Leach.

Amid a series of scandals which have rocked the show, including Graziano Di Prima‘s sacking and the investigation into Giovanni Pernice, reigning champ Vito has admitted that the show could be pulled back from it’s recent woes thanks to a slew of top-tier elements.

As well as being the 20th anniversary special, Vito revealed that the team had been handed a bigger boost than ever before thanks to the return of Amy Dowden.

Speaking to The Sun, Vito said: “I’m looking forward to it because Amy is back, you know, and we want Amy back.”

Amy was forced to pull out of the programme last year owing to her cancer diagnosis.

She recently opened up about her treatment in an eye-opening BBC documentary following her life during the cancer battle.

Elsewhere, Vito confessed that once viewers are back seeing the incredible dancer on screens, the outside noise would be forgotten.

The star revealed that routines were already being prepared and underway by the show’s leading choreographer, Jason Gilkison.

Vito said: “It’s the 20 year anniversary of the BBC, so I’m sure that,
you know, all the production and Jason, the choreographer, they are, like, preparing, you know, something really beautiful.

“I’m looking really forward to it.”

One of those routines is based on returning Amy with a post from the Strictly team revealing: “#Strictly is celebrating the return of @amy_dowden with a group dance featuring all of the Professional Dancers

“Airing in the launch show this autumn, the empowering routine will exude glamour as we welcome Amy back for the 22nd series of Strictly Come Dancing.”

“I never think about the fact that I’m the current champion, you know, because at the end, who really are the winners – our
celebrities.

“I always think that as professionals, we have to be a good mirror
for our celebrities.

“Sometimes people think that, oh, Vito won, or last year like, Jovita won, but no – Ellie [Leach] won, and Hamza [Yassin] won, and every year it’s like this,

“We have to be the best teammates, you know, strong like a rock and just act as a mirror.”

Whilst it is yet to be revealed if Vito has bagged himself a partner on this year’s show, some fans have been left devastated to hear Kai Widdrington has been benched and won’t be dancing alongside a celeb.

Elsewhere, Love Island star Tasha Ghouri will be dancing alongside returning show pro, Aljaz Skorjanec, on the upcoming series.

Strictly's full scandal so far

Strictly Come Dancing's scandal has been growing over the past few months, with several major players speaking out about what went on. Here are the key moments of what's happened so far

16th May: Giovanni Pernice sensationally quits Strictly Come Dancing after nine years on the show.

17th May: Giovanni becomes the centre of an official investigation after three former partners – believed to be Amanda Abbington, Laura Whitmore and Ranvir Singh – make complaints to the BBC.

16th June: Giovanni releases an official statement vowing to clear his name and denies any wrongdoing.

8th July: Strictly confirms Aljaz Skorjanec will return to the series, replacing Giovanni, after initially quitting the show two years ago.

10th July: Amanda Abbington launches fresh legal proceedings to get the rehearsal footage from her time with Giovanni, after allegedly he refused to release the videos.

13th July: Graziano Di Prima is axed from Strictly for “gross misconduct” after footage of his treatment of Zara McDermott is brought to the attention of the BBC.

Graziano quickly broke his silence, apologising for his behaviour in a statement and saying he “deeply regrets it”, adding his “intense passion and determination to win might have affected his training regime.”

15th July: Strictly bosses implement new duty of care protocols, including having a chaperone present throughout all rehearsals.

16th July: Zara McDermott speaks out publicly for first time. She states while the production team were “amazing to work with”, she found the rehearsal room “completely different”, confirming there’s footage of “certain situations”.

19th July: Anton Du Beke is put under the spotlight for his “1970s attitude” and treatment of female celeb stars, particularly after allegedly referring to 2009 partner Laila Rouass as a “p***” after getting a spray tan.

21st July: Paralympian Will Bayley, who has limb condition arthrogryposis, revealed he was encouraged to leap from a table during a dance routine, despite fears. The stunt caused an injury that forced him to withdraw from the show.

22nd July: MasterChef’s Gregg Wallace admits he broke down in tears and got a nasty stress rash on his face during his time on Strictly in 2014.

22nd July: Despite ongoing issues, the Strictly professional cast begin rehearsals for this year’s series.

23rd July: Celebrity agent Melanie Blake claims she was sexually assaulted by an unnamed pro dancer while backstage on the show, and claims she witnessed ageism, rudeness and a rough treatment to the point of injury.

23rd July: Strictly is forced to beef up security after ‘an intruder scales the wall of the rehearsal studio’.

23rd July: BBC boss Tim Davie breaks his silence on the ongoing allegations against Strictly, saying he is ‘deeply sorry’, adding: “Hundreds of people, be they pros, contestants or crew have been part of it and had a brilliant experience.

“At the same time if someone thinks there was something wrong or they want to talk about their experience then of course we want them to raise that with us. Be in no doubt we will take it seriously, listen and deal with it as appropriate.”

24th July: Strictly 2023 star Krishnan Guru-Murthy holds a bombshell interview with Amanda Abbington on Channel 4 news, where she claims she was bullied, with some of the ‘humilation being of a sexual nature’.

27th July: Laura Whitmore releases a statement regarding her Strictly experience, saying “I thought my experience was specific to me but I’ve since learned I was wrong”.

She adds she is not part of the official complaint, but has come forward to support Amanda with the BBC, alongside others.

28th July: Laila Rouass speaks out against the accusations regarding Anton Du Beke, saying she “never felt pressured” by him and “personally insisted on six to seven hours training a day”.

10th August: Graziano breaks his silence on his Strictly axe, saying “these vile, false allegations have ruined my life.”

He also told of the “shocking” end to his friendship with Zara McDermott.

We also revealed that Amanda Abbington was also quizzed for a second time as Strictly execs recruited 15 new staff to monitor rehearsals.

11th August: Just as the investigation was expected to conclude, Amanda made a dramatic intervention. Giovanni was on the brink of being cleared until Amanda handed in more text messages.

24th August: Graziano Di Prima called in top lawyers to sue the BBC and to try to clear his name. He recruited big hitters Whitestone Chambers to fight his corner.

A source said: “They’ve also looked at his BBC contract and believe there are grounds to sue.”

Meanwhile, the BBC also delayed releasing the findings of the probe into Giovanni Pernice. The Sun revealed that the results of the three-month investigation were unlikely to be announced in August.

Cathedral City makes major change to cheese shape – and customers are fuming

CHEDDAR fans are cheesed off after manufacturer Cathedral City changed its slices to square-shaped – meaning they don’t cover all the bread.

The cheese-maker has had a fierce backlash of complaints from fans who miss the former rectangles, which fitted perfectly over a piece of toast.

a sandwich on a cutting board next to a package of cathedral city large slices for sandwiches
A change has been made to the popular lunch time snack

The pack weight has not changed at 150g, but slices have become thicker and shorter.

This has lead to complaints of fans having to use two pieces on bread instead of one.

Cathedral City said the measure, affecting the original packs of mature slices, was brought in for a temporary period during which its slices would be packed at another site.

No date has yet been set for a reversal.

Meanwhile fans have implored the manufacturer to change the slices back.

One said: “Cathedral City really sliced us a raw deal—literally. They went from genius rectangle slices that fit our bread like a glove to basic square slices.

“Now my sandwich has corners of sadness!”

And another called Mary Lynn said: “Don’t try and market “NOW SQUARE SLICES” as if this is a GOOD thing.

“It isn’t. Slices of bread are not square. There is now insufficient coverage. Please re-think.”

Another added: “What the hell is this!? You’ve made your slices square & now I have to use a slice & a half to make a sandwich! Makes zero sense.”

More complaints were seen on supermarket websites like Tesco’s.

One fan fumed: “Who makes 8cm x 8cm sandwiches, and who wants even THICKER slices of cheese?

“So after 20 years I’m swapping to Tesco Gouda slices to give them a try.”

Cathedral City previously said the measure, which began around May, would last around three months but have not said when it will end.

A spokesman told us: “The plan remains for the rectangle shape to return. No date has been set for this. We are seeing that some of our consumers prefer the square shape, whilst some prefer the rectangle.”

The news is another blow for customers who have noticed a number of changes in their favourite supermarket snacks.

Chicago Town scrapped its Ham & Pineapple flavoured deep dish pizza, in a blow to lovers of the divisive meal.

Food manufactures can sometimes discontinue items if they are not selling well or if they want to introduce a new products.

M&S recently axed its popular Colin the Caterpillar in a jar from shop shelves.

The cake jars landed on the supermarket shelves in 2021 with fans hailing it “a tiny pot of joy.”

The treat consisted of layers of chocolate sponge, Belgian chocolate sauce and chocolate ganache topped with a mini white chocolate Colin face in a convenient packaging.

Why are products axed or recipes changed?

ANALYSIS by chief consumer reporter James Flanders.

Food and drinks makers have been known to tweak their recipes or axe items altogether.

They often say that this is down to the changing tastes of customers.

There are a number of reasons why this could be done.

For example, government regulation, like the “sugar tax,” forces firms to change their recipes.

Some manufacturers might choose to tweak ingredients to cut costs.

They may opt for an alternative that’s cheaper, especially when costs are rising in order to keep prices stable.

For example, Tango Cherry disappeared from shelves in 2018.

It has recently returned after six years away, but as a sugar-free version.

Fanta removed sweetener from its sugar-free alternative earlier this year.

Suntory tweaked the flavour of its flagship Lucozade Original and Orange energy drinks.

While the amount of sugar in every bottle remains unchanged, the supplier swapped out the sweetener aspartame for sucralose.

Kellogg’s also axed it All Bran Golden Crunch.

The popular breakfast item consisted of crunchy wheat bran and mixed cereals pieces with a caramel flavour.

It offered as a sweeter alternative to its Original All Bran, which remains in stock.

Nestle also axed its fan favourite Yorkie orange bars last year,.

Howevver, shoppers were able to pick up bars this year as retailers looked to clear stock.

The limited edition bars were launched in 2021 when orange chocolate was all the rage.

Around the same time Dairy Milk orange bars were also launched, following Cadbury‘s orange Twirl in 2019.

But Yorkie’s flamed-coloured version, along with Dairy Milk’s, have both now been scrapped, with loyal buyers left demanding its return.

Responding to the news on X, one fan who claimed to have bought 500 of them said: “Why on earth has it been discontinued?! It’s ten times better than Terry’s chocolate orange!”

Biggest deadline day transfers ever from Ozil to Arsenal and Rooney and Ronaldo to Man Utd – but were they a success?

IT’S that time of year when the Premier League’s biggest clubs make astonishing moves in the transfer market.

Deadline day sees our elite sides splashing the cash on the biggest names in football.

Despite flashes of his talent, Ozil underachieved at the Gunners

But, just because they pay outrageous fees and salaries, it doesn’t always represent value for money.

SunSport looks at 10 huge signings that have caught the eye over the years.

We also lift the lid on how they fared following their blockbuster moves. Check out our verdicts below…

Mesut Ozil – Real Madrid to Arsenal

In 2013, at the eleventh hour, Arsene Wenger pulled off the unthinkable when he brought the best playmaker in Europe from Real Madrid.

It was a huge statement signing by the Gunners, who splashed a whopping £42million on the German.

He was named Arsenal’s player of the season in 2015-2016, and made 184 Premier League appearances, scoring 33 goals and producing 54 assists.

However, he was bombed out of the Emirates when Mikel Arteta arrived at the club – partly because of his huge £350,000-per-week salary in 2021.

Arteta said: “Mesut’s achievements at Arsenal are undisputed”.

SunSport’s view: Underachieved at the Emirates.

Cole Palmer – Man City to Chelsea

Another transfer that came out of the blue, Palmer swapped Manchester for London in a £42.5m deal last summer.

He needed to leave Man City for game time, while Chelsea wanted a talisman.

They found it in Palmer, who went on to be one of the players of the season last campaign.

He scored 25 goals in all competitions, and scooped the Hublot Young Player of the Season awards, as well as the PFA Young Player of the Year.

SunSport’s view: Hit – he is already on his way to legend status at Stamford Bridge.

Cristiano Ronaldo – Juventus to Man Utd

There is an argument to be had that you should never return to a club you were once a hero.

Ronaldo originally left United for Real Madrid in 2009, won everything, then moved to Juventus.

Unbelievably, the Red Devils snatched him from the Italian giants for £13m, believing at 36 he still had loads to offer.

He scored 24 goals in 38 games in his first season, but found himself frozen out when Erik Ten Hag was appointed as United boss.

An interview with Piers Morgan further made his position untenable and he moved to Saudi Arabia.

SunSport’s view: 24 goals in all competitions is enough to tell you he did his job well.

Wayne Rooney – Everton to Man Utd

Rooney, at 18, was the most in-demand teenager in Europe.

That’s why Man Utd splashed £30m on him in 2004. Incredibly, he scored a hat-trick on his debut in the Champions League.

He would go on to win 13 major trophies, including five Premier League titles, four League Cups and the Champions League, the FA Cup, Europa League and FIFA Club World Cup once.

Better still, he would break Bobby Charlton’s long all-time goalscoring record – scoring 253 goals for the club.

SunSport’s view: Probably the best deadline day signing ever.

Dimitar Berbatov – Spurs to Man Utd

In 2008, Tottenham’s languid Bulgarian striker – a crowd favourite – was snapped up by Sir Alex Ferguson in a £30m deal.

There were doubts whether he could fit into Utd’s style of play, but he soon put those fears to bed.

In his four seasons, he won two Premier League titles, the League Cup and the Club World Cup.

He also shared the Golden Boot in 2010 with Carlos Tevez after scoring 20 times that season.

SunSport’s view: An astute signing and class act.

Ashley Cole – Chelsea to Arsenal

After refusing a contract with the Gunners, Cole was swapped for William Gallas plus £5m in a deal that took him to Chelsea.

It was an outrageous swoop that caused a stink in North London, with Arsenal fans unfairly dubbing him ‘Cashley’ Cole.

Cole would lift the Premier League with Chelsea in 2010, as well as four FA Cups, the Champions League and Europa League.

He also improved as a defender under Mourinho’s stewardship.

SunSport’s view: Great at Arsenal, but even better at Chelsea. Big hit.

Manuel Akanji – Dortmund to Man City

Akanji was snapped up by Guardiola for a bargain £15m in 2022.

And as first seasons go, winning the treble in his debut campaign was the perfect introduction.

The Swiss defender has seemingly fitted into City’s style and is one of the first names on the teamsheet.

At 29, he’s coming into his prime.

SunSport view: A masterstroke signing for the price and quality of the player.

Manuel Akanji’s £15million signing was a bargain and masterstroke

Claude Makelele – Real Madrid to Chelsea

The Frenchman, bizarrely, found himself surplus to requirements at Real Madrid.

Chelsea stepped in in the summer of 2003 – paying a then whopping £16m to bring the midfielder to the club.

Then manager Claudio Ranieri declared he would be the “battery” of the team, and he wasn’t wrong.

He would win consecutive league titles with the Blues, before ending his career at PSG.

SunSport’s view: Unspectacular, but incredibly effective. Another success story.

New Chelsea signing Claude Makelele.
Claude Makelele proved to be a very effective buy for Chelsea

Enzo Fernandez – Benfica to Chelsea

The Argentina World Cup winner’s astounding £107m move last January completed a £323m transfer splurge by Todd Boehly in his first season as Chelsea co-owner.

But, in truth, Enzo’s move from Portuguese giants Benfica has been a disappointment.

So far, he has failed to justify his price tag, although his transfer fee wasn’t his own doing.

However, he has still found it difficult coping with the demands of English football.

SunSport view: Jury’s still out, and at 23 he has time to prove himself.

Jury is still out on Enzo Fernandez’s £107million move to Chelsea

Antony – Ajax to Man Utd

In 2022, a mammoth £80m was handed over to Ajax for Brazilian winger Antony by United.

He was championed by manager Erik Ten Hag, who got the best out of him in the Netherlands.

However, he has struggled for form at Old Trafford and has now found himself frozen out of the team.

Incredibly, it has been suggested he might get sold for a pittance of the fee paid. But who would take him now?

SunSport’s view: Biggest flop on transfer deadline day? Only Enzo can beat him to that.

SUNSPORT'S TRANSFER NEWS LIVE

TRANSFER Deadline Day is here - with clubs against the clock to finalise their summer business.

High-class sports car with 176mph top speed can be picked up for less than the cost of Britain’s cheapest new motor

A CLASSY sports car with a 176mph top speed is up for sale at a lower price than the UK’s cheapest new motor.

The stylish soft-top is a rare collectable classic, with fewer than 300 estimated to remain in the UK.

Maserati is probably best known today for producing sharp-edge supercars to rival those of Ferrari and Lamborghini.

But the firm’s back catalogue is littered with far subtler and softer sportsters with its famous Italian flair.

A real sleep hit of this range is the Spyder, a convertible model released in parallel with the Maserati Coupe.

Making its debut in 2002, it enjoyed a limited run of five years before being replaced by the GranTurismo, which is still produced to this day.

The design was based on the legendary Maserati GT after it was given facelift in 1999.

Under the bonnet, the Spyder boasted a 4.2-litre V8 that was co-developed with Ferrari.

These days, it is surprisingly rare with only 255 left on UK roads, according to HowRareIsMyCar.

Which makes it even more special that one of the earliest models has gone up for sale at a bargain price.

A listing on AutoTrader offers a 2003 Spyder with 74,150 miles on the clock.

Despite the relatively high mileage, it looks to be closed to factory-fresh condition.

The gleaming silver bodywork doesn’t appear to have a scratch or scuff on it, while the black leather-trimmed interior is absolutely spotless.

The ad states: “Despite its thrilling performance, the car remains comfortable to drive at low speeds, allowing the delightful sound of the V8 to be heard.

“Inside, the Spyder impresses with its luxurious black leather seats that extend to the dashboard and doors.

“Generally the car now wants for nothing and drives superbly.”

The owner added that the only thing that doesn’t work is the radio, which they haven’t fixed as they use their phone as a sat nav and radio instead.

The classic convertible is on offer for just £9,250.

That’s more than £4,000 cheaper than the £13,795 Dacia Sandero – the cheapest new car on the market in the UK.

But with a 176mph red line, the Spyder can handily outstrip the 113mph Sandero in spit of its advanced age.

It comes after a major UK car brand became the first ever to release an EV priced identically to the equivalent petrol model.
