Mark Cuban Has Exposed the Untold Truth of Shark Tank’s Pitches

ABC’s Shark Tank garnered the audiences’ attention since it first premiered in 2009. Over the years, the show has managed to successfully entertain viewers with intriguing business deals.

However, there’s a lot that fans don’t know about the show. Mark Cuban, one of the show’s judges, exposed a lot of unknown facts related to it. In a SXSW interview, the businessman talked at length about the realities of the popular show. According to him, what viewers see onscreen differs greatly from the behind-the-scenes of the shooting.

TV Reality: Judge exposes the truth of his show

Shark Tank was released in 2009 and since then, every week, entrepreneurs get on stage to present their deals and propositions. Contestants are tested at every interval by a panel of judges consisting of real-life successful businessmen.

The deciding authority of the show comprises Mark Cuban, Robert Herjavec, Barbara Corcoran, Lori Greiner, Daymond John, and Kevin O’Leary. Typically five of the judges or ‘sharks’ appear in an episode.

However, not everything is portrayed as-it-is in the show. Most of the behind-the-scenes details are cut to fit in a short episode. Cuban spoke about this, and many other facts of the show when he appeared for his South by Southwest keynote.

It’s all real. There’s nothing fixed and nothing staged. Literally those deals go from 30 minutes for just stupid-ass ones to 2.5 hours for some people.

The influential businessman revealed that though some offers take half an hour to discuss, others could take hours. This raw version of the shoot is not translated on screen, and it goes through multiple edits and cuts.

Obviously [ABC] edits [the pitch] so it goes down from 2.5 hours down to a half-hour down to 8 to 14 minutes.

Though this information was not new to avid Television show viewers, most fans of the show weren’t aware of the same. The shark assured that most of what is shown is not scripted or acted out, but not everything is exposed to the viewers.

The exposé continues: Hot tea spilled about the show

As the shark continued his revelations about the business reality show, he discussed other aspects. Cuban mentioned the interpersonal relationship between the sharks, which may shock most people.

We all get along but when you’re there from 8:00 in the morning until whenever we finish, and there’s 8, 10, 12 deals coming through and you’re shooting 8-9 hour days, just like any family you get annoyed as all get-up.

Fans either expect the panel to hate each other or be in an amicable friendship. But the reality is that they worked together like any colleagues in a company, and often got annoyed at each other too. Spending so much time with the same group of people can lead to frustration and minor disagreements.

The reason I love doing the show – and it’s a lot of work – it’s the #1 show on television watched by families. Everyday I have people coming up to me saying, “My son…” “My daughter…they love the show and we watch it together on Friday nights.”

Even though it’s a lot of work, Cuban ended up stating his love for the show. Shark Tank has truly influenced and impacted the lives of many, even those who see it onscreen. Start-ups that don’t end up getting signed also receive publicity by just being on the show.

Shark Tank is available to watch on Hulu.
