Precisely, Bach Baras Vrat falls on the Dwadashi of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month, and it is of particular importance to mothers who desire their son’s long life and healthy life. Now, let me tell you an interesting story about Bachh Baras. There was a moneylender in some village who had seven sons. He started a pond, but the pond could not fill up for continuously twelve years. Troubled, he asked the pandits. The pandits said the pond will fill up only when you sacrifice either your eldest son or eldest grandson.
The money lender sacrifices his eldest grandson and the pond gets filled. But during the arrival of Bachh Baras, the family worshipped the pond. The money lender asked the maid to cook “hula”. But the maid mistook it for wheat paddy and cooked the calf of the cow.
Seeing that, when the puja of the cow was over and it went to milk the cow, it was busy milking. On seeing this, the moneylender family said, “Bachh Baras Mata has saved our honor and returned the child.” In this way, receipt of the calf back, the moneylender spread the news in the village that every mother having a son should observe fast on this day.
Bachh Baras is more popularly called Govatsa Dwadashi. This festival depicts the love of Lord Krishna for the cow and the calf. It is believed that on this day, offering prayers and worship to the cow and the calf invites the blessings of Lord Krishna and the deities residing in the cow, thereby bringing happiness and prosperity to the house.
The importance of worshiping mother cows is great in order. It is believed by Indian religious thought that in the Puranas, all the pilgrimages reside in the mother cow. The worshipping of the mother cow gives such virtue, which is not obtained even from big yagyas and donations.
